I am going to build a custom 358 Norma mag and I am wondering what twist rifling to use. I will be shooting mostly 225grn and 250grn bullets (I do not wish to shoot anything heavier). I will also be using a REM 700 SPS 7mm REM mag as the donor rifle, what are your thoghts on this action.

boom stickThere seems to be little issue with a "Fast twist". A 1 in 12 will be good for about anything and no harm it seems with a 1 in 10. There has been much said about Remington giving the factory 35 Whelens too slow a twist making more people go with a 9,3x62. 1 in 12 seems to be the goldilocks unless you want to use Woodleighs top weight 300's that would do better with a 1 in 10 but since you have no desire to go heavy go with goldilocks.
My 35 Whelen is a 1-14 and shoots 225-275 grain bullets very well with a decided preference for 250's. I know Remington uses a 1-16 on their barrels but don't have any experience with them. I would lean toward the 1-14 since you are not going any heavier than 250 grains with your bullets. Cliff Labounty rebored mine 10 years ago just before he retired and recommended the 1-14. It shoots 250's like a varmint rifle.

"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." 460 wby shooterThanks for the info guys!
I wouldn't go any faster than 1-14 and I think 1-16 is fine for most any buulet under 275 grs. Not talking about long boat tail bullets here. With the slower twists you can get a little more velocity.

MuskegMan1-10 is the std twist for the 338 Win
1-10 is the std twist for 9.3x62
.358 is right between the two and folks want to go 14 or 16. What is the change in physics going on here?
Go 1-12 me thinks.
I have a 358 Winchester built on a Remington 700 action with a Douglass 1:10 barrel. It will shoot any bullet from 158 grain pistol bullet on up. Even at 2700 fps (chronographed) it prints the 158 grain bullets to .33" center to center groups.
The bigger bullets don't seem to mind the "fast" twist either.
My experience is that if you have any doubt - go faster twist.
Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

I heard Goldilocks got pretty heavy after eating all that porridge.

Rule 303I would opt for the 1:12 twist. It is what I run in my 35Sambar -358WSM- Handles the Woodly 275 alright.

theback40I have a 35 whelen imp with a 1-12. The lightest I've shot is 200 grn, on up to 300 grn and it shoots them all very well.
I built a 357 maximium on a martini cadet, I had a 1-10 twist barrel, and used it. It doesnt shoot the 158 grn and lighter pistol bullets very well, but loves 180 grn and heavyer.
Thats just one gun, so who knows really.
