marlin will be comming out with a xlr series in 35 rem 1st quarter 2007! this comming from a marlin insider...

..I always wondered why Remington came out with the ammo and Marlin didn't follow up with a rifle. If I find a niced used one I'll probably buy it...and have it rechambered to .358/.356 Winchester...

personaly i think it needs to be rechambered 358 win and kept under 47,000 psi (read remington factory ammo) with a 20" barrel and ballard rifling for a grand 300 yard deer gun. and hollow point pistol bullets for varnmits

Boom Stick I have been elk hunting now for about 10 years with the 35-Whelen. I was wondering some this past elk season about getting something with a little more range on it but still shoot a heavy bullet into bull elk.

I was also poundering if that beltless case was the reason I have had penetration problems. So my question is, should I go to one of the bigger magnums for more distance and penetration ability......Please do lay it on me, looking at Ruger 3 position safety and Mauser type actions.

as most here would attest...the problem is not the whelen but probably an under loaded sub premium bullet.

you should be able to load the whelen 270 gr north forks to 2450 fps which is more than enough. read the 2007 anual guns and ammo article on cartridge efficiency...a good read. it highlights the power and cart efficiency of the 35s and the whelen especialy. if you feel you need more do a 35 whelen ackley improved. good for up to brown bears! if you need more than that the 358 norma is the way to go or if you like obscure carts the 35 newton that you could rechamber the whelen to. good luck. anyone else want to chime in with good 35 whelen loads?

Unfortunately the xlr will have a 24" barrel. This is to gain the most of Marlins new Levermagic ammo.

I guess you could always cut it down.

I'm one of those that love the 24" barrel. It's easy to cut down a barrel, but alot tougher for us that like rifle length, not revolver length barrels on our rifles.

I have two of the original 336A's with the 24" barrel in .35 Remington and they are about my favorites. But my two 71's with the 24" barrel are still at the top of my list.

so......is it safe to rechamber a 35 Rem to a 358 Win? there are no pressure considerations? how about cartrdige length....no problems here? you can probably tell from these questions that i have no experience in this area, but it is of some interest to me. thanks for the information.

the new xlr rifles with the v threads are good to 40,000 psi...bring it up in the gunsmithing board and you will get better answers than i can give...
