Bent FossdalActual Velocity for .358 Win.?
Reading my manuals, this cartridge have somewhat different velocitys in th edifferent manuals.
Barnes claims their 250 grs XFB to do 2496, while Hornady claimes 2300 with their 250 SP.
Swift claimes 2110 at max with their 250 A-frame
COTW claims factory load at 2250 with 250 grs.
Speer claimes 2333.
Sierra and Nosler do not have a .358 250 bullet.
My Norwegian Handloaders Bible claimes 2300.
Gentlemen, what are your actual clocked experiences with the .358 Win with 250 grs bullets?

El DeguelloSir, my actual chronographed velocity for the .358 Win., from a 20" barreled BLR using the Speer 250-grain spitzer, WW .358 brass, Federal 210 primers, and 51.5 grains of WW 748 power was 2420 FPS @ 10' from the muzzle.
This load was 2.5 grains LESS than Ken Waters' max load for this bullet (54 grains) published years ago in the handloader or Rifle magazine-don't recall which mag. His load was worked up in a Mannlicher-Schoenauer carbine, also 20" barrel.
This was before there were any premium .358" bullets, so I traded off the rifle. Had I known Nosler wasa going to build .358 Partition bullets, I would have kept it - it WAS accurate!

I know that this is not what you have asked for, but i have a BLR in .358win, but have not shot any 250gr bullets.
I have done a lot of load research and found a great disparity of velocities with different bullets. It seems like a lot of different powders work well with the .358 win and my educated guess would be 2,250 to 2,350 fps for most 250gr bullets in a 20" tube. You dont need a premium in the .358 with these velocities, the 250gr Speer hot-core is a great performer. With that said i really do believe that the all around best bullet weight is the 225gr, although i shoot the 200gr for whitetail deer and black bear. Good luck with your .358 is sure is one effecient cartridge.
By the way, i know you are a gun smith but Ruger has come out with their new Hawkeye rifle,in stainless, sythetic stock, 22" barrel, in .358win now theres a nice package. Oh yeah always go for the 1-12" twist rate it is the best for .358 calibers.

TSJIn my savage 99 250 grn Horn and AA2015 BR gave me 2400 fps, and good case life even in the rear locking sav. As I cant get 2015 now, I'll have to try 748.

Bent FossdalNo Boom, I am not making it, I am just looking at speeds from the 358 win, inspired by Woodjacks insane idea of how small a case he could get a .366 286 at 2300 from.
And when looking at barnes claimes of a 250 X at 2496 from the .358, I was curious.
To me, the old 9,3's are grand, but to make new cartridges in this diameter is somewhat silly to me, since the .375 is so close and have better bullet selection.
I am really looking foreward to hear the results off
Con's .375-08!
