Austin Hunter you make a very valid point. The problem is that most of the suggested loads push a 139 / 140 gr cup & core bullet at 2900 fps & I think one claims 3000 fps!

I think a 140gr Sierra or Hornady bullet at 2700 fps max will work well and not blow up. That would be fine out to 300 meters if you can shoot it accurately.

I would still use a TSX 150 gr or Accubond 160 gr for big animals like Sambar or elk.

Ray is spot here as far as I am concerned. I have shot all of my elk with a .338 Win Mag. Why use a 7-08? The out of state tag costs as much as a new rifle these days...

From a practical standpoint, I would say the 7-08 and 7x57 are good 250 yard elk rifles and maybe 300..

The 7mm/06, 280, 284 are good maybe for 400 yards

The 7 mags are good for 600 yard shots and the Wby etc will give you another 100 yards...

To believe the 7-08 or 7x57 are 600 yard guns

is inviting failure sooner or later IMO..

Not saying this is written in stone, ranges may vary and opinion may vary, but its close enough for guvment work! Eeker

A 7mm08 with a high grade bullet is a killing machine in the hands of a good shooter. 7mm Rem Mags launching bullets at 600 yards is inviting failure sooner or later too.

Been loading 139 grain SSTs and 140 grain Accubonds in my wife's 7-08. Both bullets have a nearly identical POI with the same charge of Varget so I have her plink with the SSTs and hunt with the accubonds.

Just been deer and antelope so far but the performance has been good. Would not hesitate to have her shoot elk out to 250 (300 if conditions were ideal) with the accubonds.

Yup. That's the shots that don't get talked about. They're all DRT, don'tchaknow. Smiler

I load 160 grain Nosler Partitions in my son's 7mm-08, and he's killed two moose at short range with it.

At one time I had a Model 70 Winchester compact 7mm-08 that had a 20 inch barrel. I loaded some 175 grain bullets near max with 4350. I didn't shoot them for accuracy but I did crono them and got near 2500 fps as I remember. You might do better with some other powder. This was years ago and I (like some gun whore) sold the model 70 to get something else. I have always regreated that.

Two hundred and fifty yards is about my max. With age and eyesight I don't like to go much longer. I never would shoot at 600 yards. I shot expert in the Army with my M1. I got 9 bulls at 500 yards that day.

Yep - 250, 300 max. Couldn't agree more.

BTW - the 2,650 fps 120 gr load dropped my daughter's aoudad where it stood at a 140 yards. They are tough animals. Through the center of the right shoulder and right underneath the skin of the left should as a perfect mushroom. DRT - dead right there.

I have a 7-08 that I use for deer in thick bush..because it is so dam handy. The 139 gr Hornady is super on deer. If I would use this cal on elk or moose I would use the 150 Partition. Going heavier (160 and up) fills up too much case capacity and velocity is compromised. The 150 Partition is kind of a sweet spot.

140 to 150 gr

Premium Monometal -TTSX, GMX, CEB etc
or
Premium Bonded -Accubond, Trophy Bonded, InterBond etc-

though typically use a 300 Win-
Have killed elk with a 257 AI-- do not thoroughly recommend it-
but the elk did not seem to know it was too little of a gun

Most important of all is know your limitations, too many hunters do not. Know that your 243 is not a 300 WBY, know that your 30-30 is a 200 yard gun for the most part..Limit your range to your ability to shoot and to the bullet and caliber you use.

ive been having outstanding performance from Woodleighs 140gr Weldocre PP in my 7mm08 since the factory Federals wore out.

pulling a few out of a couple sambar (elk sized no doubt) performed great perfect mushroom.

may go up to 150gr Woodleigh in near future.

Here's this past year's bull taken with the 150 Nosler Ballistic Tip from a 7-08:

Wow! My bullet torture tests with Ballistic tips left me very impressed (kind of puzzled really because they held together so well), but I still dont have the gnuts to use one on an Elk. Even with moderate velocities. What was the exit wound like, assuming there was one..?
