Then you must have a 12ga. Then hand guns 22 LR, 9MM,45 and 44mag.
I have every one of them and think I could take any thing in the USA with them.

My current choice

222 Rem in my Tikka LSA 55 - a real tack driver
7mm08 - Kimber Montana
9.3X62 - Simson - I want to take this to africa
404 Jeffery or a 450/400 Double - which ever I can afford to build or buy first for my African dream

This is always fun!

22 LR - Micro Economics
223 Rem. - Macro Economics

270 or 30'06 - I really can't decide and does it really matter anyway?

9.3x62 - Because its big and non magnum.

This is a very subjective subject and is likely going to depend heavily upon your logistics.

The "best" 4 calibers depends on where I am, what is available, and what I am trying to do with them.

For instance, Ele up close in Afrika:
I'd choose rifles in .500 Jeffery, 470 Nitro, .450 Nitro, .416 Rigby, in that order.

Squirrels in Missouri, I'd opt for:
.25 Stevens RF, .22 LR, .410 shotgun, 28 gauge shotgun in that order.

For me, I'd replace your 300 H&H with a 30-06 and your 404 Jeff with a Barret 50 BMG in case 6, can't fault your choices though.

Yes, this is a good thread!
Far better IMO than to discuss e.g. the top 10, as this discussion actually has practical merit.

If a shotgun is not included, then
.22 LR
.223 (probably)
.30-60 (probably)
9,3x62

If a shotgun is included, then
.22 LR
.30-06 (probably)
9,3x62
12ga

If handguns also included, then
.30-06 (probably)
9,3x62
.357 mag
12ga

To me, the 9,3x62 is the biggest I can handle and it's up to the task to take anything.
This leaves me with the need of something in the medium/light class, and then the most sensible is the .30-06 or .308. I'd love a 7x64 or 7x57 but ammo availability (and cost to some degree) dictates .30-06.
Performace-wise there is little to choose between in the medium range so pretty much anything from 6,5x55 to 8x57 (or .338-06) would do the trick.

When you stop an think about Clem's selection ,It's down right HARD TO BEAT for a 4 gun battery !.

I would of only perhaps added a combo Rifle/Shotgun , probably in 22/410 or .223/12 or 20 gauge !

Great selection Clem !. tu2

Yeah, true, but I'd substitute a 7mm Rem mag for the 06. Just a personal preference.

1. Economic neccessity (which means I'd be lucky to hunt deer close to home and the big bores would be sold).
22 LR
223 bolt rifle
270 (I'd keep two to have a spare)

2. If I moved to Africa to hunt and could only bring with me four rifles.
7X57 (or a 270)
300H&H
9.3X62
404 Jeffery

3. If I didn't handload and chose to only own four rifles.
22 LR
223
30-06
375 H&H

4. If I loved to handload and chose to only own four rifles.
220 Swift
7x57
300 H&H
404 Jeffery

5. If I decided to keep the four favorite rifles I have in my safe right now.
7x57
270
300 H&H
404 Jeffery

6. If the government passed a law saying I could only own four rifles.
223 battle rifle
308 battle rifle
300 H&H
404 Jeffery

Nicely outlined.

1. Economic necessity, if serious, would probably mean a 22 and a 308 bolt.

2. Ah--Africa:
270 win loaded with 130 TSX 3100fps (good guinea fowl and goose gun)
(despite long 338WM use there, which calibre I have been thoroughly satisfied with)
375 Ruger (now with 250 TTSX bullets at 2900fps, a concept whose time and price would have edged out my 338WM with 250 Nosler at 2700fps in the 80's)
416 Rigby (the absolute best one rifle for walking the forest, with 350 TTSX bullets at 2800fps)
500 AccRel or 500 Mbogo or 505 Gibbs (a true stopper)

3. No handloading !
223 Rem bolt
30-06
375 HH
460 Weatherby

4. With handloading:
see #2 above, if Africa,
if North America, then
270 Win or WSM
338 WM or RUM
416 Ruger

5. Keep what I have:
270 Win
338 WM
416 Rigby

6. if a law limited 4 rifles:
22LR
270 Win
338 WM
416 Rigby

+-+-+-+-+-+-+

"A well-rounded hunting battery might include:
500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" --

Interesting exercise.

If going economics, I'm going for inexpensive cartridges and/or easily reloadable...so

.22 LR
7.62x39mm
30-30
45-70

Otherwise, it's

6mm Rem
260 Rem
8x57mm Mauser OR 8mm-06 AI (can't decide which, as I like both)
45-70

Not to bash anyone, but I dont see a whole lot of magnum chamberings. I guess this is out of preferance, however, if I only had to choose 4 then they might all as well be mags. Reason: you can always download a mag. If you need the power and range, a standard cal might not be able to load up to the level that you are looking for. I realize that for the vast majority this is purely sematics. Though I would rather have and not need then need but not have.

I'll play too!

1. 22LR (as long as it's my CZ 452)
2. .225 Win. (as long as it's my Post 64 Mod 70)
3. .270 Win. (as long as it's my Pre 64 featherweight)
4. .338 Win. (as long as it's my MOA ugly, SS, "paddle-stocked" Ruger 77)

I guess what I'm saying is that I find it hard to separate caliber from rifles I know, trust and love. I can love and value (rationalize?) any caliber if I bond with the rifle chambered for it.

If you're talking rifle cartridges and are excluding shotguns and handguns:

- I think you must include a good rifle in 22lr to cover all the plinking and bottom end small critters.

- I think you must include a good mid-bore rifle in 30-06 to cover your medium and thin skin large game.

- To cover your varmint chores up to your long range medium game that fall between the 22lr and 30-06, I prefer the 243 Winchester.

- To cover your thick skin heavy game, dangerous game and large stuff over and above the 30-06, I prefer the 416 Remington as it covers all the ground of the 338s and 375s while having enough horsepower to work as a stopping rifle.

That would be my four, add a good 12 gauge and you'd have all the long gun hunting bases covered well.

I like the qualifiers.

If the government said you could only 4 rifles:
1. HK G36 (have)
2. HK 93 (have)
3. HK G3 (have)
4. Barrett M82 (buy)

Because we would be using them one day with laws like that.

Pick from what I have:
1. 223 Semi-Auto
2. 308 Winchester
3. 300 RUM
4. 375 H&H

Pick from what I have plus what I'm building

1. 223 Semi-Auto
2. 308 Winchester
3. 8x68s (replace with 338 Win Mag as an option)
4. 416 Rem

6x45mm/20 gauge Model 24 (nice and light)

6mm-284 Model 700 (a genuine half-inch rifle)
