Dear all

Is anyone out there using this bullet with good accuracy results in their 7 mils?

I was going to ask for peoples experience in their 7 Rem Mags (as that is what I am using) but any 7 mil really.

Just curious as I am a big fan of this design of bullet due to the excellent performance on game.

Thanks in advance.

In all fairness, the bullet is great but it'not manufactured to withstand the 7mm Mag.

You'll do alot better off with a 150-160 gr. projectile.

Cheers,

The 7mm Rem. Mag. with 160 grain Partitions is probably one of the most widely used combinations on the planet. Hard to go wrong with that under any circumastances.

I didn't use the 140gr Pro-Hunter but the Gameking in a 7mm RM. I pushed it at max listed load for RL19, so it was faster than many would recommend for a non-premium bullet. Mine shot it well, and I used it for only one deer so my results are not much of a test, HOWEVER, It worked fine.
I shot a muley in south central Idaho at about 170 yards. The bullet passed completely through hitting high onside lung, exited lower lung on the offside. Insides were absolutely a mess. IIRC it passed between ribs going in and exited directly on a rib. There was some bloodshot meat on the back of the onside shoulder, and all around both holes.
I did crazy things to coyotes. Eeker Nate

I've shot deer with them in a 7x57mm to good effect. I use them from time to time in an .280IMP and get excellent accuracy but have never shot a deer with them at those velocities. I wouldn't hesitate to use them though.

I'm using them in my 7-08 Ackley, and they shoot lights out, and drop deer right where they stand.

Thanks all and Gerry I agree.

My rifle has a sweet spot though for the 140 grn class of bullet. I would prefer to shoot the 160's and although accuracy is acceptable it isn't as good as the 140's. The reason I wanted to try the PH is that I have found them to have impressive penetration properties but at the same time providing decent expansion.

I have been amazed at how they hold together but I am reliably informed from a person who knows alot more than me about these things that it is down to the flat base. That is the reason they hold together much better than the Game King.

Thanks

Jon

Jon, hope you are well. See here a report I posted on this site last year regarding prohunters, a 120gr 6.5mm in my case.

It is a sample of one, so worth little as evidence, but it is worth the read in any case.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Hello there Brian

Yes very well thanks and hope you are too.

Just read your account and I remember it after reading the first paragraph or so.

Yes good info. I noticed it would be one failure out of 5? Good info. I have found the PH generally to be very impressive in terms of penetration but do realise there are limitations as it is a conventional cup and core design.

If they shoot accurately in my 7 Mag I would use them probably but if accuracy is not there I will leave them alone.

The reason I am loking for an alternative is that I have about 300 Nosler Solid Base which are doing sub half and regular quarter to in the 3's groups. They are very accurate but realise that they will run out in the relative near future. The obvious route to take would be to go to the Ballistic Tip and I reckon if I were a betting man that these will shoot just as accurately. I suppose I am looking for a sensible alternative hence the reason for looking at the PH.

I have got about 40 x Nosler BT's in 140 grns which I will try first and foremost. Think they will prob work.

Best

Jon

I think the Nos BT will work in the same manner as the Sierra. I have pictures of recovered bullets somewhere but don't remember if I tried a BT. What did tweak my brain is how little difference there was from one weight to another. There was very little difference between weights within the given mfg. So all Hornady SST's were nearly the same, all weights of Sierra GK's were very close, etc. I thought for standard bullets the Hornady's are pretty impressive, even in the SST version.
The only one I had trouble recovering was the Barnes X and XLC. They tended to overpenetrate my stack of water filled jugs as they didn't penetrate in a straight line.
The most impressive was a .338 250gr. Woodleigh PP. Nate

In my 7x57 the bullet that performs best is the 140gn GMK. The 140gn prohunter takes a couple more grains of powder behind it before I can see any pressure signs but I never had anything better than 1"- 3shot groups with it, whilst the 140gn GMK gives me consistently .3". There maybe something to do with the boat-tail design, as the gun shoots 139gn Interlocks, 150gn GMK, 160gn GMK and 162gn Interlocks with the same degree with accuracy.

best wishes,

Finman

better have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it....
