300 Win hands down.
180gr TSX, Lapua brass, Fed match 215, 76gr RL 22, 3000fps (same tragectory as a 270 win 130gr)
Anything more powerful ought to get a .338 bullet (340 Wby my favorite).
There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.

nyriflemanMine would be the .300 Weatherby, mainly because I made the best (read longest) shot of my life with that caliber.
But I do have a .300 RUM which I picked up with the idea of using it as a donor for a 340 Weatherby. I made the mistake of shooting it first though, and the 1/2 inch groups it produced convinced me to add it to my battery as a backup to the weatherby.
I also have two .30-06, with a third on order from a Guild member, as well as .300 WM on the way in the form of a Kimber 8400.
I fully expected the .300 WM to be the pick among the majority here, but was surprised at the number of votes for the RUM.
I was not surprised at the lack of votes for the .30-06 Improved, AKA the .300 WSM.

Dr BAll the 300 mags are great rounds with various advantages particular to the individual round.
With that said I prefer the 300 WSM . Why?
1. It is hands down the most accurate.
2. I prefer short actions to long. (lighter and more accurate).
3. I don't like belts. They are a relic of the past with no usefull function today.
4. I don't like the recoil of the hotter 300s

molar1If the 300 wsm is superior in terms of accuracy, then why do you not see this cartridge being used extensively at 1000 yd matches? The old win mag is.
300win
actually all the 30' mags

It is...
14 January 2007, 20:08
TC1best 300?
That would have to be the .300-06

Followed closely by the 300H&H.
The rest where just marketing ploy's

Dr BTC1
I would have to agree that the 30-06 is a great round. I own more 30-06s than any other centerfire round. I bought my first 30-06 when I was 12 yo (with my money not daddy's).
As much as I love the 30-06 it's not as accurate as the 300WSM and a little slower.

sbsmithI've used all of the various 30 cal's save the Remington Ultra Mag. With everything considered,
accuracy, power(no muzzle brakes), gun handling
it's a no brainer with the 300 WSM. My Win Mod 70 Featherweight has turned out to be the most accurate 30 cal I own. Great cartridge/gun combination.

Dr B, speed isn't everything. Most people can shoot non-magnums better because they have less recoil which makes it a more accurate round in the hands of many.
.30-06's feed better (smoother) in many rifles and aren't limited to two in the magazine like many of the WSM's are.
30-06 ammo is cheaper and more readily available than any of the WSM's and that goes for reloading components too.
Any game animal in the world would be in just as much danger being in front of a competent rifleman with a .30-06 as with any of the 300 magnums.
100 years of success counts for something, I seriously doubt there will be a 300WSM 100 years from now, but that's just conjecture on my part.

coyote baitThere sure have been a lot of good responses. It makes it seem like a person cannot own just one 300. I have also been thinking, would it be better to step up to a 325 WSM? I can always load it down, or is the 300 all I will need?
Life is too short to be taken seriously, it is only temporary and none of us are getting out of it alive.
15 January 2007, 02:31
Ben WalkerI prefer any 30 cal other than the short mags.
15 January 2007, 03:18
grizz007the .30 caliber class does well in any of its various chamberings I have ever shot and have never been able to figure out the best--yet.
I got rid of a superb shooter, a Remmy 700 300winmag-damn good shooter about the best-sold it cause it was a Rem-duhhh.
Found the best shooter in the RUM class-but it was a REM as well. So now it is a toss up with a Ruger .308, Ruger .30-06 or my FN 98 .30-338- a tack shooter-----I think that is the best

15 January 2007, 19:42
nyriflemanPersonally I do not consider the 325 WSM a step up over the .300 Win, Wby, or RUM, any of which with can be handloaded to 3100fps with a 180 gr. bullet.

boom stickthe 300 AMERICAN (375 ruger case necked to 308) will have more room than the 300 h+h by 10% and a smaller package...
if you wanted to it could be made with a nice sloping 25 degree shoulder for slick feeding...
the best 308 is still yet to be
no belt
std action
no rebate
other than a wildcat it seems pretty good and i dont think you can stop it from being made by tons of wildcatters
15 January 2007, 21:55
carpetmanA no brainer--get a 30-06 and you are good to go. If you need more, most likely you are leaving North America. If more is needed--a faster .30 wont do it you need a bigger bore. Despite what the guy at the counter told you, those magnums don't forgive a bad shot. You cant really just hit em anywhere and they explode. You use half again as much powder for the gain over a 30-06 when you go to the magnums. The gain really aint earth shattering as many seem to think.
15 January 2007, 23:20
coyote baitboom stick, tell me more about this 300 American.
Life is too short to be taken seriously, it is only temporary and none of us are getting out of it alive.
15 January 2007, 23:52
boom stickits just an idea but you neck the 375 ruger brass to the 308 in whatever neck length or angle you desire...it is a high capacity case that is without rebate and belt

if you want a slick feeding go shallow for more performance do a 40 degree shoulder but any way you slice it you could do 220's damn fast and with 165's a damn fine varnmit gun. it would outdo the 300 h+h in performance but not too overbore like the rum.
16 January 2007, 00:02
grizz007boom, perhaps if selling becomes an issue it may be better if it is called the 300 Alaskan-sounds pretty catchy to me. Biased? mmmmmhhh maybe.
16 January 2007, 00:09
citori.30-06 or .308 Win.
I guess I'm boring. I like to go with common calibers. .22 RF, .223 Rem, .243 Win., .308 Win., .30-06, .375 H&H, all do the job and both cartridges and components are available everywhere. My next purchase will be a .458 Lott. The fact that it can fire the .458 WM is attractive to me. I need to think of a reason why I need it so I can convince the wife.
Tanzania in 2006! Had 141 posts on prior forum as citori3.

boom sticko.k.
the 300 american will be a 35 degree shoulder and the alaskan will be a 10 degree

i just equate alaskan with a bigger bore...
how about kenai?

coyote baitDoes the 300 Ultra Mag kick much more than a 300 Weatherby or 300 Win Mag?
Life is too short to be taken seriously, it is only temporary and none of us are getting out of it alive.
20 January 2007, 20:04
Ben WalkerI cant tell much of a differance between my 300 ultra and my 300 win mags.
20 January 2007, 20:42
Iron BuckAnother vote for the 30-06. Out to 300 yards it will do everything that ANY 300 mag will do when the hunter places the bullet in the vitals. A ggood marksman who knows his rifle would have no problem beyond 300. Skill trumps brute force. Lighter bullets (actually cartridges). Cheaper ammo. Available world wide. Can't get any better than that

20 January 2007, 21:18
sdgunslingerSome folks do hunt in country where over 300 yard shots are not uncommon .
I'm with boomer.......I think that 30 Ruger , american/alaskan is gonna be the best 30 caliber game cartridge ever dreamed up.

seafire/B17G06....

21 January 2007, 00:58
kudude30-338 (308 Norma) will do it all. A very excellent cartridge. It is easy to reload for and brass is 338 necked down or 7mmRM necked up. (Neck down is easier!) For those of you headed to places where the head stamp is important, you can get 30-338 headstamped brass. Kudude

Henry BuckThanks to all that have responded on this thread to the original poster...I enjoyed reading about everyone's experiences with the .300.

shootawayI don't have the answer to your question,I am still testing. Most of what has been said here so far is useless info. The calbers should be tested by someone who can really test rifles to determine which is best for given situations."I own them all and tried them all means nothing"
25 January 2007, 10:41
RMiller300 RUGER

I think there all very useful.(All good for any N.A. game).
I now have a 300 RUM that I bought some 180 Barnes MRX bullets for. Last time I shot something with a rifle was deer with a 300 win mag and 200 grain Barnes TSX bullets.

that would be something. Have any clues outside of what we have posted. "It is the man behind the gun that makes the difference".

Any good 180 from a 300WM will take any animal in North America have mild recoil and can be quite accurate from the right set-up.
