The 18" barrel throws a bit of a spanner in the choices here. If the hunting conditions required an 18" barrel then a Lever gun would be the go. A standard length bolt action with a 18" barrel doesn't quite gel for me.

Interesting exercise though.

Grenadier,
All the choices are very close the way I see it.. I would only cut back to a 18" barrel starting with the .35 Whelen and larger but would prefer a 20" barrel for them.. For the smaller cals. I would want a 22" barrel..
Not what you want to hear I know but you'll need hearing protection every time you shoot one of those small cal. choices you gave with 18" barrels..Not something I would put up with in a hunting situation..

I can't respond to the poll.

The 18" tube is a deal breaker for me.

Otherwise in a min. 22" tube 30-06 and .375 Ruger for standard actions.

Ya, I agree, your choices suck. They don't make much sense. For a short barrel you need a much larger bore caliber selection to choose from.
Michaels .500 B&M or the .458 B&M makes more sense. Not anything in the .25-06 realm. Even the .35 Whelen could use longer barrels; at least 22".

18" is simply too short for anything you have listed. Might as well take a 60mm mortar and lob shells at them...

Well, I was going to pick the 8x63 (8mm/06) for the larger bore of the pair, and still will.

But I can't vote for it in the poll, because the poll won't accept the answer to just one question. It tries to force me to chose one of the combinations and one of the small bore options, both of which I refuse to do.

"Other" would have been a nice last option for each of the questions,so a person could answer some questions with specific chamberings and not others.

Anyway, for a standard length action in the small bore, I would take a standard 6.5x57. Together with the standard (not AI) 8x63 as the large bore, that would be my pair, though I would prefer them with somewhere between 21" to 23" barrels.

Thats because all the "Gun/Cartridge Geeks" hang out here. We all like the looks on peoples faces when we inform them what we are shooting and they don't have a clue as to what we are talking about. We just like being different from the masses of normal cartridge shooters.

Yeah, I too can't vote for anything with a barrel that short. POSSIBLY 20", but 18"? I can't imagine any hunting in the world where I'd want a bolt rifle that short.

I've got a 26" tube on my whelen. Smiler

Yeah, I voted but would never build a bolt gun w/ 18 or even 20" bbl. By mixed bag I had to assume Africa, so I went 7.64 & 9.3 but would be happy w/ 280 & 9.3.

I would have voted 25-06 30-06 but with the 18" bbl requirement. I opted for 30-06 and 375Whelen which would be fine in 20-22 inch barrels. As with the previous poll, I only really like one. That is the 36-06 in a carbine. I included the 375 since it was the biggest jump up in power, even though it dont really excite me any more than the 450Marlin.
Now 30-06 and 338Mag or 30-06 and 458Mag with 22 inch barrels, that might work for me.

What would be interesting is a poll with 3 action lenght so I could vote for the 7mm-08, 30-06 and 375HH. And then the barrels could be made progressively longer like 18,20,22 inch.

Unless you're planning to stock these for a hobbit they're going to have a funny center of balance with 18" tubes. I'd opt for 20" or 22" barrels for a 9.3 and 24" to 26" for a 7x64/.280.
