In New Zealand, especially on the tops it can be difficult to stalk close enough.

What does the term "tops" mean?

Cobra,

I agree, 600 yds is really stretching it. Coupled with the hunter's ability to correctly judge the range vis-a-vis the range that the rifle has been zeroed in, makes it a very very risky shot to wound the animal. My longest shot so far was 292 yds ranged with my Nikon rangefinder, and then I am still nervous about making a one-shot kill.

Sierra 140gr Game King Boattail with a WIN LR primer and 47.0grs AR2209 (4350) in Rem or Win cases. Top groups, good pressure and 2900fps out of my 7mm-08 24" barreled Remington SPS.

I used 160gr Sierra BT exclusively in my 7mm Magnum for decades and will use no other bullet brand. Never found a reason to change.

Mountain, open tops; above the tree line.

Don't they have swales and dips and gulleys and brush and such? How did the locals do it before they invented a 600 yard spear? Smiler

Before the 600 yard spear was the ex army SMLE 303. With the bayonet fixed they were very easy to throw up to 1,000 yards. Big Grin
