Do yer self a favor and build something else. That way you can have something really nice that shoots great...and something that won't make you wish you had something else.

Bought my 300Wby in '73. Up graded from a 30-30. Looked in CTW, and that was the mostest I could get in .30cal. Was eighteen at the time, . Had some good hunts. Would NOT buy another one now. Taste has improved with age. Will keep it, cause I have had it for 33+ years.

Hey BBH, Back when I was a young`un, one of my Elders had a 300WbyMag. Beautiful Blue and Wood with a good many usage marks on it.

He raised corn and hogs, but when Hunting Season rolled around he would load an old WW2 Jeep in the back of his Corn Truck along with a pile of coolers and head for Alaska.

I can still remember some of the great stories he would tell and he always brought interesting new kinds of meat back.

He eventually got his own airplane(corn and hogs apparently did right well for him), put in his own runway and would fly to Alaska each year.

When I bought my "first" Weatherby it was because of all the nights I dreamed about the hunts he told us about. Now I have a Wby U-Lt and sure wish he was still around to see it and how well it shoots.

I do have more accurate rifles, but the Wbys I've had and shot always shot well enough to kill things I'd be hunting them with.

BTW, guys, I had some gun dealings with blackbearhunter, put him on your good guy list, great guy to deal with.


My late uncle shot a .270 Weatherby. It was a Japan rifle and the action was real smooth, good trigger pull. I handloaded his ammo and checked it for him before deer season. Shot right at 1 1/4"- 1 1/2". It was a good solid reliable rifle.

Yeah I always wanted one as a kid, the Deluxe of course. Then they came out with the Classic Mark and I had to have one. Still got it, its in 300WBy.Then I read Trophy Hunter in Asia by Elgin Gates. Good grief what he hunted with his. I wish I could retrace his footsteps. I am not a fan of white line spacers and shiny finishes but I am a fan of the 300 WBY round and I can't bear the thoughts of shooting it in something else than a Mark V. I also have a 270 WBY Euromark that has a knock out piece of wood on it. I bought it right and was going to sell it but I am having trouble parting with it. I own 6, but don't really profess to being a Weatherby fan. Sometimes I wonder what folks have against them though. My 300 shoots 3/4 inch groups at 100 yds. with the Nosler Partition of 180 grains at 3200fps.

Bought two mark Vs at a store closeout for a low price.Wasn't happy with either and sold both.Will never own another.

I never could stand the Weatherby promotions, rifles or cartriges. I still can't.

I did buy a MK V in 378 back in the 70's and loaded for it. I got it really cheap and it was a very accurate rifle. I still can remember the handloads for it but I never got over the minimum load of 105 grs of 4831 with 270's. What a crazy cartridge.

It was a easy gun to sell. Some people really like them.

I don't think that I would ever buy another Weatherby.

Amongst my rifles, I currently have three chambered for Wby cartridges. The first one, which I bought a LONG time ago, is a pre-war Model 70 re-chambered by Roy "hisself" in 1948 to .300 Wby. Killed my first 6x6 elk with it. Killed my 2nd 6x6 with it too. Don't ever plan to sell it. It seems to love 83 grains of original 4831 with 180 gr. NPs. I know that is over book max, but was very carefully worked up and in this particular rifle it works well. Have been using that load for over 45 years now.

The other two are my back-up antelope gun, a "Weathermark" Mark V in 257 Wby, and my "just for the heck of it" rifle, a 1st year of production Model 700 Remmie (bought new in 1962) which I rebarreled a couple of years ago with a "take off" stainless Rem barrel in 7 m/m Wby.

All three are scary accurate and handsome is as handsome does in the hunting fields.

Are you counting Vanguards? I have one in .257Wby and love it. And someday I'll sneak up on a MkV in .340. I may hate it, but it's just a gun I've always wanted to try.

I dont really care for the rifles but I do like the cartridges they built,especially the .340

I own two Weatherbys currently - a SVM in .220 Swift and an ULWt Custom Outfitter in .300 Wby. They are both more than adequately accurate for hunting rifles as I have made woodchuck kills at over 500 with the Swift and big game kills at over 600 with the .300. They have served me well and are more than likely not the last Weatherbys I will own

I have two of the Weatherby Accumark 338-378s they are the finest rifles I have ever owned.My cousin has shot .25 groups with mine.I love the actions and those Kriger barrels.It is a first class rifle.

I bought a Japanese Weatherby Weathermark Alaskan in .375 H&H before "I knew better." Has the older non-radical synthetic stock.

Is an amaxingly accurate rifle ... has shot some groups smaller that bullet diameter and has never given me even a small problem. I use it for nasty weather.

May have to part with it, but I hate the thought as it has served very well indeed.

Dad bought one of the first left handed ones he found for me in 300, and have had it ever since,love the gun, had it restocked to get away from the "W" style.. Have always wanted one of the 378's or 460's

Mark 5 stainless 30-378 mag best rifle I own.

I own and shoot extensively two Weatherbys. A .340 in the cheap sporter model that is beat-up, dinged, scratched but with a little spit and polish it looks fairly presentable. It has been with me to Alaska, bagging a huge Alaskan Yukon Moose, and to Colorado several times taking several Bull Elk. It shoots one holers with a 225 or 240 grain North Fork or a Barnes 225 grain TSX. I also shoot a .257 Wby in the Accumark model that is also a tack driver. This is one of my Deer rifles that my grandsons have taken many Deer each season. I don't get to see much of it when the Deer season is in. It likes 115 and 120 grain Nosler Partition and 115 grain Barnes TSX. I will never sell these two rifles, they are too good. Good shooting.

Cobra I hope you get your stainless synthetic in 340. If you like it 1/2 as much as I like mine you will be a very happy man. 3 shots around an inch @ 200yds is not too shabby. I have a couple Weatherby's and I don't think I will be rushing out to get more of them, but my 340 will be one of the last rifles I ever part with.

Some years ago, whilst at TT Proctor a English gun maker, Trevor, the owner, handed me a Weatherby and asked me what I thought of it. I can't remember what I said but he told me it must be quite a task to get all those bolt lugs to have even contact.
He then showed me a 375 H&H he had made himself on a Mauser action. Well, I have not thought of buying a Weatherby since.
One of my hunting buddies has a Proctor rifle in 270, it shoots very well. It has the best trigger I have ever pulled
But hey if you like Weatherby rifles that's ok, go shoot it and enjoy doing so.

Brass for reloading is too damn expensive!!

I have owned the following Weatherbys, in the order they were acquired.
First was a 300 WBY Mag Fibermark, with the thin 24" bbl. It was one of the first factory rifles avialable in a Synthentic stock.
I killed a lot of game, deer, antelope, bear, with that rifle untill...
My wife "stole" it from me after she shot her black bear. She killed a few elk with it too.

I had a 257 WBY and a 416 Wby, another 300 WBY and a 340 WBY.
A Weatherby DGR in 458 Win Mag saved my life when I was charged by a Gorilla.
I have never had any problems with Weatherby rifles.
All of them shot plenty good enough for hunting with Factory Weatherby ammo and handloads.
The 458 Win Mag was always shot with Federal Ammo.

The .257 Wthby is my "Death Ray" It's evil and I love it!!!!!

Present owner bought a 460 in 1980 still take it out for a roar evry once in a while.

I have two weatherbys:

.338 Win Mag and .375 H&H Mag.

I have no issue with either rifle as they have served me well.

One thing I do like is the throw distance of the bolt. On other rifles I sometimes bang the back of my thumb on the scope when I cycle the rifle quickly. Not so on the Weatherby though.

I still love the Model 70 best, however.

I imagine a man could become quite fond of a rifle that saved his life. I'm sure I would never sell one that had done what yours has.

Those barrels are button rifled barrels made by criterion which is owned by kreiger.They are not the famous cut rifles kreiger barrels.However,I am sure that weatherby doesn't mind people confusing the two.

And as long as they shoot as well as they do, I don't care how they rifled it.

They seem to clean rather easily as a nice bonus.

The first rifle I ever bought was a Wby Mk V Stainless/Synthetic in 7mm Wby. Great gun, great cartridge, but the price of ammo got me into hand-loading with a quickness. The only problem with owning a Weatherby as a first gun (I know I'll draw a lot of fire here) is that I tend to walk right past the racks of Remingtons, Rugers, Winchesters, and Savages when shopping for a new rifle. Shortly thereafter, I bought a Weatherby Mk V SBGM in .257 Wby Mag. About two weeks ago, I took delivery of my first custom rifle: a .300 Win Mag built on a Wby Mk V action with a Hart tube, McMillan stock, and Jard trigger. Clearly the action was built for strength, not accuracy, but the rifle averaged 0.334" 5-shot groups @ 100 yds with the first load I tried. There will always be a special place in my safe for those fine Weatherby rifles!

My 1st - Mark V .340 "what a round"
My 2nd - Vanguard 22-250 "sweet"
My 3rd - Vanguard .257 "dont' know yet, still saving up"

They are great rifles used by some of the world's most accomplished hunters. I own five of them and the worst of the lot is a 3/4" MOA shooter. I can appreciate the fact that some might not like the looks of them, but to say they are not good rifles or inaccurate is just plain bullshit. jorge

So, why use Weatherby brass? Plain vanilla .300 H&H or .375 H&H brass of ANY reputable make works and lasts just fine as a source for cases.

The .300 WBY is the easiest...I am still using cases formed in 1959 from Winchester Super-X .300 H&H brass. NOT real tough to make....just involved firing factory-loaded .300 H&H rounds in my .300 WBY rifle and "Voila!" there they were, nice fire-formed .300 WBY brass.

If you own a case-trimmer (and every handloader should), you can make any of the Weatherby cases from .257 WM to .375 WM from either .300 or .375 H&H brass with very little effort.

colt-sauer 300
whitworth (custom) hart bbl. 300
mark v-340
mark v-338/378 KT

all work in accordance as to what the master wants, regardless of the target.
