I know this is off topic, and I know it is bad form to boast about your kids, so I hope our Welsh leader will forgive me boasting about my buddies son. We took the boys out fishing last Saturday afternoon for a few hours before school restarted. The result was that Nigel's son Matthew caught this little beauty: 30" (75cm) long, 12lbs (5.5kg) of Dollaghan Trout. This is a unique brown trout sub species found only in one system here in N Ireland. Head of this Monster: Try explaining to this 10 year old that he may never catch a better fish. Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

That's great and even better because of who caught it. _______________________________

CD awesome fish!! Is it like a Ferox? It doesn't seem to have the Jaws of a Ferox. That really is a fish of a lifetime. A freind of mine was voted Ghillie of the year last year, and he's only ever had a couple of 6lb'ers!! What is the systems record fish? Best regards, FB

FB, Dollaghan are a type of trout unique to Lough Neagh and its feeder rivers here in the North. The best way I can describe these fish is that they are land locked sea trout. Instead of running out to sea to feed, these fish go to Lough Neagh, returning to the rivers in late summer and autumn to breed. I would expect they have a largely midge diet in the Lough, with perch and roach fry etc. This fish was caught on the Ulster Blackwater, upstream of a village called The Moy. These fish regularly go to 5-6 pounds. No one I know has ever heard of one this big. We have no idea what the system record is yet. The fish was caught on a big copper spoon: we were fishing for pike. Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Last time I was near Moy I was leading a hunting party of 12 luckily we blanked Does it still have the little gunshop down the sidestreet (painted dark green?)?

That litle gunshop is gone some time now. The guy's son was shot dead on the premises. There is another gunshop in the village. There were some pretty nasty activities from both sides around that village over the years. Glad to see the back of it... That's a cracking fish, looks just like a half decent Welsh sea trout (sewin), he may never get a better one.

WOW! Tell us about the tussle to bring it in. When I was about the lad's age, I tied into the first big fish of my life, a knarly old Pike. I don't remember much about that whole year, but I sure remember trying to bring that big, nasty bugger in, worrying about breaking off, or tipping the stupid canoe over..memories for a lifetime. Gonna get it mounted? RG
