I loaded up some book max loads in 45acp for hunting and they are grouping great and my 1911 colt seems to love them ...but ....how long can i shoot this 45acp+p max loads before i need to change the spring to a stiffer one or is it a case of if it ain't broke don't fix it?Am i worrying over nothing or do i need to alter the colt before i tear something up? she ran 50 XTP's fasssst in a row without any hiccups...but the grip screws got loose... | ||

Can't have much to say unless we know what you're loading. As much info as possible would be helpful. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever. | |||

HS-6 powder loaded 9.4gr.@950fps. from Hornady manual 200gr.XTP no pressure signs, new colt government 5in.barrel series 70....book say's i can go up 0.4gr.more for 1000fps. but i'am stopping for now... | |||

A good rule of thumb is to change the recoil spring every 2000 rounds or so with full power loads. Maybe more with "hot" loads. What lb spring are you running? I use an 18 or 18.5lb spring with normal factory type loads. I use a 20lb spring in a Commander. Once upon a time, when I was loading the 45ACP "hot" I used 24lb recoil springs. An extra power hammer spring is a good idea when using hot loads as well, as it keeps the slide closed a little longer. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY | |||
