Buffalo.....
Alright, looks like I'm making a quick trip out to West Texas to shoot 3 cow buffalo this weekend. I will be in somewhat of a time crunch. All three need to be shot in the same morning. I really don't expect it to be much of a hunt, and I suspect one or two of the cows may be shot in the head from the truck with my .300 WSM. However, I wanted to get you guys' opinion about this.....what do yall think about trying to shoot the first one with my .44 mag (chest shot). I'm using 300 gr. Federal Cast-Core ammo at 1160 fps. These cows are supposed to weigh around 800 lbs a piece. Any thoughts/suggestions??

Ive shot quite a few with handguns and one with a 250 grain cast 44 mag and believe it or not it was the quickest kill ive withnessed on one. Sometimes you can hit them with a big bore rifle or a mag rifle and they just keep eating. About the only way to drop one is a head or spine shot. If all youve hunted is whitetail you will find them slow dieing. Your load should work fine on them.

I've shot and/or seen quite a few Buffalo taken with big bore revovlers and have not experienced any problems. Your load should work. Remember to shoot no higher than the lower 1/3 of the body

Oh most definitely.....I try to stick to that rule for pretty much all big game. IMO, a good rule of thumb.

Well guys....unfortunately I didn't get to test out the .44 on a buffalo. With the temperature rising.....we thought it best to just get all three cows on the ground as quickly as possible. I took all three with brain shots between the eyes at about 75 yards with my rifle. If you would like to see the pictures, you can see them here:
