The .500S&W takes .500 diameter bullets. The .510 bullets are for the .500 Linbaugh and .510GNR.

I would not do it. If you could don't you think the ammo makers would of done it. Stick with the .500. JMHO

If you want a 510 probably would be safer to buy the 500 Linebaugh Maximum Revolver, less chance of blowing yourself up. wave

While we're at it, answer me this...

If all the cartridges using .510 diameter bullets are called fiftys, then shouldn't the S&W and AE cartridges, which use .500 diameter bullets, be called a forty-nines? Wink

.510" bullets in a .500" gun... Sounds like a recipe for a bomb. What would you gain even if you could blow out the case to accept a .510" bullet? The cylinder throat and barrel would take a cast bullet back down to .500" along with a seriously high pressure spike. I wouldn't want to be beside you at the range when you go, BOOM and then STICK to the walls Wink

If you could seat the .510 bullets in a .500 S&W they wouldn't go into the chamber. The throats of the chamber are probably .5005" to .501". The .510 bullet wouldn't fit in them very easily. Then when you shot it if you could chamber them the pressure spike would probably blow out that chamber and bend the top strap of the frame.

So, yes you can do it, but I sure would NOT.

I believe what the original question was is whether the 500 S&W case is a straight case, or a tapered case, and if it is tapered, does it taper enough from the base to the head to be straightened out to take a .510" bullet for use in a wildcat.

I don't have the case dimensions of the 500 S&W handy, so can't answer the question. I do know the 50 AE was originally a .510" round, and can be straightened out to take the .510" bullets, but obviously can't be safely fired in a .500" barrel.

I'd say if you want to sling .510" bullets, get a 500 Linebaugh, I've shot several of them and they are great guns. I even have a 470 gr LFN gc mold that drops .512".

paul has all my assumptions correct i would use a diff barrel and smithed cylinder...i was thinking of swaging 510 bullets for multiple guns and thought a 510-500 would be great and cheap brass

Ifyou want to shoot 500 grain bullits in a 500 S&W why not use a 500 grain hard cast of .500" in diameter

My question is, if you have the money and inclination, what are you waiting for?

Boom Stick there is a .003" taper in the 500 S&W case if you loaded a .510 diameter bullet in the case and then chambered a cylender the chambers would have a reverse taper and thus is not fesiable

I don't understand the cheap brass part.
Starline is selling their own Linebaugh brass now (not just through BB anymore) and it's reasonable.
Someone had Hornady do a run of 475 and 500 Linebaugh Long brass last year or the year before too. If I remember, it wasn't stupid priced.
