Hey djg.
That's a totally subjective opinion of Unique in cast loads. For me it's always worked better for plinking loads around 8 to 9 grains. I don't think your overboard safty wise but for me there are better powders as you step up to stouter loads. Just my personal preference.
If your leading up at 5 grains I'd look at slugging the bore and seem if it isn't a bit tight right in front of the forcing cone.

Thanks. Good explanation. I literally consulted 4 or 5 sources to ensure I was below max. I am not looking for a stout load for the 44. I would like to push a non-hollowpoint bullet (~250g) at a velocity of 1100-1200 fps. This would make a nice mild load and should be fine for whitetail. I thought I was on it with the Unique. I noticed that I can shoot my 44 special load without earplugs, and I really does not hurt my ears. Nice for a handgun. 22lr's really crack out of my pistols. Unique also doesn't have the annoying muzzle falsh you get with H-110.

I think I'll try some Gold Dots and starting loads of Blue Dot or maybe 2400 and see have that goes.

CHeck the throat size of each cahmber & use bullets sized for the throat. It sounds like your throats are a bit oversize & the bullet is expanding & then being forced into the bbl. Your forcing cone could also just be very rough.

Hello. I'm seeking advise as to eliminating leading in my S&W 629. I got tired of using jacketed bullets and have been loading Leadheads 250g Keith style bullet with 10.5g of Unique. This is not a stout load, as I just want to shoot deer without all the blast and recoil. I fired 12 rounds recently and stopped because I needed to put a little more crimp on my loads (bullets were working forward in the cases). I decided to clean the barrel and it was heavily leaded past the forcing cone. I had to use 0000 steel wool over a patched jag to get it out. This barrel was cleaned very well to get all the copper, and polished with JB bore paste, before shooting lead. I had a horrible case of leading in the past with swaged bullets, but thought I would be ok with hard cast. Any advise or is this just a barrel that will not shoot lead?

If I have to go back to jacketed bullets any recommendations? I was not happy with the XTP or any hollowpoints. How about the 270g Goldtip? Thanks

My 629 leads real bad when I use more than 9.0 grains of Unique using my home cast bullets. My advise, throttle down.

Just read this book, it will tell you all you need to know about cast bullets:

http://www.leverguns.com/lbt/book.htm

Yes, it is expensive for a little paperback and some folks have a problem with the author, as he is as opinionated as can be. Also, the prices on all of his products are really high but the molds especially produce outstanding bullets and in his defense he has undergone some personal problems and is trying to recoup financially.

I have followed his advice and used his molds and have gotten outstanding success with understanding and eliminating leading and producing revolver cast bullet accuracy that had hitherto eluded me.
