montdougRe: Leading problem in S&W 629 44 Mag.
Hey djg.
That's a totally subjective opinion of Unique in cast loads. For me it's always worked better for plinking loads around 8 to 9 grains. I don't think your overboard safty wise but for me there are better powders as you step up to stouter loads. Just my personal preference.
If your leading up at 5 grains I'd look at slugging the bore and seem if it isn't a bit tight right in front of the forcing cone.

djbThanks. Good explanation. I literally consulted 4 or 5 sources to ensure I was below max. I am not looking for a stout load for the 44. I would like to push a non-hollowpoint bullet (~250g) at a velocity of 1100-1200 fps. This would make a nice mild load and should be fine for whitetail. I thought I was on it with the Unique. I noticed that I can shoot my 44 special load without earplugs, and I really does not hurt my ears. Nice for a handgun. 22lr's really crack out of my pistols. Unique also doesn't have the annoying muzzle falsh you get with H-110.
I think I'll try some Gold Dots and starting loads of Blue Dot or maybe 2400 and see have that goes.

fredj338CHeck the throat size of each cahmber & use bullets sized for the throat. It sounds like your throats are a bit oversize & the bullet is expanding & then being forced into the bbl. Your forcing cone could also just be very rough.

Jim in IdahoJust read this book, it will tell you all you need to know about cast bullets:
http://www.leverguns.com/lbt/book.htmYes, it is expensive for a little paperback and some folks have a problem with the author, as he is as opinionated as can be. Also, the prices on all of his products are really high but the molds especially produce outstanding bullets and in his defense he has undergone some personal problems and is trying to recoup financially.
I have followed his advice and used his molds and have gotten outstanding success with understanding and eliminating leading and producing revolver cast bullet accuracy that had hitherto eluded me.
