I feel I could be much more accurate with a scope on my 475 Linebaugh BFR. does anyone have any suggestions for a scope that will hold up to the recoil of this revolver. I need it for mainly 50 yard shooting. maybe a fixed power scope from 3-4 x magnification?

I have a Tasco that holds up but have ruined Burris scopes on the .44. I bought a Swift and gutted it before getting sighted in. Swift replaced it and it went on my .22. I called Magnum Research and asked about a red dot on the .475 and they said the Ultra Dot holds up so I bought one. It is so good I bought another for my 45-70 BFR. Not the best for groups but is super for hunting. I have shot many 9/16" and 5/8" 50 yd groups with my BFR's and the Ultra Dot but don't know what the guns will really do with a stronger scope. I am afraid to buy an expensive scope and gut it again.

When I needed a scope on my Freedom Arms 475, to get it through South Africa for a hunt in Zim I called FA to get their opinion on a proper scope and mount.

They recommended the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6x32, so that is what I got.

I like it real well so far.

I thought the 2x Leupold would be a good choice but it always looks like it makes things smaller to me... Strangely enough the FA guy thought the same thing.

I did fire a fair number of rounds through it before I left, but I took it off the hunt with.

Howewver I just may put it back on to hunt woth here in TX.

I swore off Bushnell scopes after they said the one I had on my 460 S&W Mag. had been "abused." The only abuse it suffered had been recoil from that gun.

I've pretty much gone to the Leupold 2.5-8X handgun scopes which have held up very well to 460 & 500 S&W Mag. recoil.

My boss has a Burris on his BFR 45-70 and I had a Nikon on my 454 Casull, I personally like the open sight on a pistol, but either one does the intended job fine

I have a Bushnell Trophy 2X6 on my 460 Mag, it was on my 500 Mag before that. I have over 2500 rounds on the scope and it is working great. But another idea you might want to consider for your 50 yards shots is a red-dot. I have one on one of my 460 Mags and one on my BFR 500 Mag. It is the Ultra-dot Match dot.

I'm seriously thinking red dot for my SRH........why not, it is a primary hunting tool and not a back-up revolver........ I shot bfrshooter's .475 and 45/70 with red dots and they worked like a charm.

I've got a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x32mm in Lovell mounts on my FA 83 .454 Casull. I take excellent care of this rig but I don't exactly baby it either (full house handloads, trudging through swamps, climbing trees, etc). Not once in the five years I've owned it have I had an issue with the scope or mounts-kind of like set-it-and-forget-it. As far as red dots go, I couldn't get one manufacturer to guarantee me that their product would withstand such recoil levels. As I have to remove the rear sight inorder to attach the scope mount, in-the-field scope failure is out of the question.

I have had a loopy forever and it is still going strong. My problem with a pistol scope is they are all too dark in the morning and evening. I need more light with old eyes and I can't see the crosshairs or the deer through them. The red dot solves the problem.

Thank you. I took my .45 Vaquero down today and shot six shots offhand at my 50 yd steel plate. I use a lyman boolit at 347 gr's and 21.5 gr's of 296---A real thumper. I had all six in 3". Good to go for deer.

I recomend a good fixed power leupold either a 2x or 4x. I know they make some good variables anymore but if i was on a once in a lifetime hunt with a handgun of that power level id want the altimate in reliablilty and ive yet to have a fixed power leupold handgun scope let me down.

Here's another vote for the Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x32mm. Shop around a little. They can vary in price significantly. Don't skimp on good mounts/rail.

Redhawk,
I have used an Ultradot of one of my .22 revolvers and liked it. Not quite as accurate from the bench as the stock iron sights but much faster target pickup.
I been thinking of adding one to my 460 and my 500.
How have yours stood the test of recoil so far? Which models do you have? 1 inch or 30mm? Rings?

Snowwolfe, I find it easier to shoot tight groups out to 100 yards with an Ultradot than with open sights as it's easier for me see....... Out to 25 yards I like open sights, but when shooting distances greater than that, I find my shooting more accurate with the red dot....... And you are right about acquiring your target quickly with the Ultradot!

After many thousands of heavy loads, recoil has not harmed the Ultra Dot. I like the 30mm and the rings that come with it have worked fine as do the Warne rings. The scope is light enough that it doesn't need 3 rings.
Whitworth has watched me shoot tin cans at 100 yd's with it. I would prefer a smaller dot for target work but since it is for hunting, it is just fine.

Snowwolfe, I have the Ultra-dot, Match-dot. it's the 30mm one that has the dot size adjustment, 2,4,6 and 8 mil dot and 11 brightness settings. I have one on my BFR in 500 Mag and one on my BFR in 45-70. The one that is on my BFR 500 mag was on a S&W 500 Mag for a long time and then went to my S&W 460 Mag and is now on my BFR in 500 Mag. I could not tell you how may thousands of rounds are on the red-dot, and it is holding up great. I have a 1 inch Ultra-dot that I have used on my BFR 500 Mag that is in the gun safe for right now, it is waiting for it's turn to go back on to a new handgun. It has over 2000 rounds on it and it is just as good as the day I bought it. I am sold on Ultra-dot.

Redhawk,
Thanks. As usual you guys here just make me spend more money, lol.
But it sure is a lot cheaper than a Leupold!
Thank you for the tips.

What rings did you use for the 30mm Match Ultradot?

Snowwolfe, I use the Warne steel rings, I don't trust them cheap rings that ome with them for the big boomers.

Whitworth, I like the Ultra-dot Match-dot a lot better, with the Match dot you get a smaller 2 mil dot that is great for hunting in my opinion in low light, in bright light the 8 mil dot is very good also.

Just me and my eyes, but I really, really like the holosight on my GP100.

Out to 100 yards I'm super happy with the red-dot concept. Beyond 100 I'll take a scope.

I got the Ultradot 30. bfrshooter has one on both his .45/70 and .475 and I've shot them both and am impressed. I had some trouble coming to grips with putting a scope/red dot on a handgun as I've always used open sights, but why limit yourself particularly if your handgun is a primary hunting tool? I ordered it yesterday and they shipped it out the same day -- really nice folks.

Hi everyone ! I just discovered this forum and I'm amazed ! Lot of useful info here. My name is Sandro and I live in Italy. We don't have forums about these subjects. Even buying a FA revolver is not an easy task.

I actually have a FA 83 revolver in 454 with a 2X Leupold optic.
I also have a S&W 629 Light Hunter where I'd want to mount a Ultradot
Four 30mm or a Matchdot scope.

What's the difference between the Four and the Matchdot ? (except for color and $10 in price)

Is it possible to use the Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x32mm on an handgun ? I thought
you could only use scopes with extended eyes relief.

Yes Leupold makes a long eye relief scope for hand guns.I use one om my 35 Rem Contender.I think most guys have found that on the Big Revolvers a Red dot Sight to be more reliable than a scope.I am ordering one for my 475 BFR. ,OB
