I have a 5.5 inch barrel Ruger Redhawk in 45 Colt. I got it before it got cold here in Maine-so I haven't shot it yet. I'm gearing up for some range time and load development. I have the RCBS 45-270 SWC and the RCBS 300 grain GC SWC. I'm not looking to magnumize it, but I would like an accurate load from ~950-1100 fps range.

Will I need to be looking to get a higher front sight with these bullets, and velocities? What is the threshold for weight and MV that I need to get higher front sight (after bottoming out the rear sight adjustment-and how much higher?

I've seen some aftermarket sights that are 0.060" higher. Needed? Enough height if needed? Comments and recommendations welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Nugman,
I use 14 grains of HS6 and a 265 grain Cast Performance Bullet in a Blackhawk with 45/8 barrel. Last week I clocked it at 1070 FPS. It's a zinger!

I had been shooting the 325 grain bullet but it did shoot high so I changed back.

Maybe you will be OK with a 270 grainer.

By the way the above load is from John Linebaugh's article "The 45 Colt, Dissolving the Myth, Discovering the Potential".

I think that anyone who loves the 45 Colt should read the above article, there is lots of information in it.
Regards, Keith

Everyone holds a gun different so there is no way to tell when a different sight is needed. Only shooting it will tell you when to change.
