Is the Super Redhawk Ugly?

I was reading Ross Seyfried's column "The Powder Keg" in the Oct 2001 copy of Handloader magazine. Rifleman P.L. asked Seyfried why they made the .480 Ruger only in "...the huge, and to me ugly, Super Redhawk". Ross expressed the thought "... we share the same opinion of the Super Redhawk." I understand riflemen don't have the same opinions as hangunners about handguns. Now I put the question to you fellow handgunners: Is the SRH ugly? I love mine so I have to vote no. Slim

I don't think it's ugly but who cares, any firearm I ever used got better looking as the freezer got fuller

Some people think the Ford Edsel is a truly beautiful car. I think it looks like a carp.

Same with firearms. Some people like one particular design, some people don't. I guess that's why there are so many different designs, and why some folks collect a certain model or type.

I think the RSRH is kind of homely, but who cares? As long as you like it, that's all that matters, eh?

Ugly! It looks like a huge frame with a skinny barrel screwed onto it. But I prefer the grips on the Super Redhawk as opposed to the thin stocks of the Redhawk.

I think it's ugly. It just seems too bulky. I really like my Bisley, just wish I had another one with a 5.5 inch barrel.

Yeah, they're ugly, and heavy, and the grip is too small for my hand. Why then do I own one? I got one with a 9 1/2 inch barrel for $175.00. Had to buy scope rings, and a Hogue grip, but with a 2X scope, this thing shoots way better than I do. I'll put up with ugly for that level of performance.

Maybe I'm crazy (been accused before) but when I look at my SRH, if a person would cut off the barrel right where it comes out of the frame and attach a sight that follows the frame contour, wouldn't it look just like a SP101 on steroids? Cool.

A SP 101 on steroids would be cool Big_R. I don't,I just like the way the SRH looks so dang beefy. I will admit that I think it looks a little out of proportion with a 10" barrel but I still like it. And anything that will take the pounding of super hot loads like it does has got to be alright, ugly or not. Thanks for all the responses--I love it! Slim

Uglier than sin. Just not my idea of what a handgun should look like, but then of course my TCs aren't either.

I posted a brief message earlier and you said that I don't get off that easy....Okay...I don't think the SRH is a showpiece to look at but I don't think that matters. It was designed and built to be a workhorse and it seems to do that very well.Look at the 1911 auto. Not many would call it a thing of beauty but look at it's popularity.Since beauty or the lack of,is all in your head anyway,I believe that it gets better looking with time when it performs well.

No , it`s not !! I own one , in fact it was
my first gun and it still has that massive
appeal to me !I like the big , oversized frame and the 9.5" barrel , any S&W looks
like a toy compared to it!Period !
$ per $ it is the best .44 Magnum you can
buy , it`s very accurate and will take years
of (ab-)use !

I've never cared for the aesthetics of the SRH, but I absolutely adore my 7 1/2" 480, though I'm considering bobbing it to 5", and making it a two tone by putting a brushed finish on the barrel and cylinder.

The guns shoot so well that the aesthetics are a mute point.

I think they are kind of awkward looking. I like the Raging Bull better in that respect. But like others have said, looks don't really matter a whole lot.

They're ugly to me and a little bulky for daily carry but there's no question that they are one of (if not the) strongest DA frames on the market. A lot stronger than my S&W's. They look better with a scope if you're into that kind of thing.

I for one, am glad my SRH is big & bulky. When I'm loading those big fat .454 Casull rounds in it's 6 shot (yes, 6 shot, not 5 like the others) cylinder it's comforting to know my gun was built to take it. Opinions vary, that's why there's horse races. I looked at a Raging Bull 1st, but one in my hand it felt "ugly", I like the fit of the SRH much better. To each there own, I love my SRH .454

Of course it's ugly. So what? My M29 is NOT ugly, but when I walk up a mountain I sweat a lot, and the gun gets wet. It sits in my safe now (caught it before it rusted). I have a 629 now, and even with Fishpaw grips it's really not as pretty as the 29, but at least I can carry it.

If the gun feels good and shoots well, that's it.

BTW, I have a Colt Match Target that some unfortunate put away wrapped in a towel. DEEP pitting. The gun store owner was going to parts it to Numrich Arms, gave it to me for $50 instead. It's worth that to ME for the parts, since I have a Challenger that I like very much, but was playing with hanging weights on. I detail disassembled and cleaned up the MT, and it works perfectly. I LOVE bringing that "ugly" thing out and letting people know that I got it for $50.

I vote that the SRH is a beautiful handgun, BUT it is heavy. I have to carry a two quart canteen opposite so I don't put my back out.
I have been bugging Ruger to come out with the 5.5" Redhawk with the Super Redhawk/GP-100 grip. Now THAT would be a real beauty!!!!!!

Well I think there are better looking wheel guns out there. I also think "ugly" is to harsh a reveiw of the SRH. They are great shooting firarms, and when it comes right down to it. What else matters?

I think the SRH is ungainly looking. Having said that, the two that I've owned have been the most rugged 44s I've ever owned (out of several dozen). I never felt concerned about strength of the gun when shooting even "suicide handloads" through my SRHs... Accuracy was not as good as the best 629 I've owned, but was definately acceptable for hunting purposes...

Man it's a good thing I can read faster than my Kimber. If she would have seen what Jagtip posted about her....whew not good.

There is no such thing as a good looking DA handgun. There are some that aren't completely obscene but none can compare to the 1911 or SBH.

As my good friend "Craftsman" often says, "Beauty is as beauty does". I think the gun is butt ugly, but extremely reliable and effective. But that is why we don't all drive the same car.
Good luck and good shooting
