New Info for 500 Smith "Long" (California?) Cartridge..need interested parties ...
Just talked to Jack Huntington about this and he wants to know how many of you BFR and Encore shooters would be interested in doing this as he has the reamer, just needs to make a brass order. There is a $500 tooling charge and a mininum of 25,000 cases to be made(at 40 cents each)....If we pooled together, then we could get this going....Advantages are 1/2" longer case that could be loaded hot,or normal with low presures and on the cylinders, wall thickness is not compromised. Also,WoW factor is increased and you can still use 500 Smith ammo. This is basically a 50 Alaskan case, but .500 instead of .510....So,if interested, please "raise your hand now" Smiler
PS.This would also work in Winchester,Browning and Marlin Rifle LEVER conversions(1895,1886,348,1871,etc)

Excuse my ignorance but.....How do we do it?

What kind of a time frame do we have?

I'm all for it! As I've said before, I think this cartridge is perfect for the BFR!! Big Grin

Problem is 25,000 pieces is just to much,so I am going to pass on this now....Just to costly...

Well it does not need to be that expensive...
trim the 375 ruger brass at the shoulder and stuff with the .500's,
The ruger brass and the 500 have the same casehead size

The headspace will be on the mouth but can headspace on the rim for the 500 sw

do a light roll crimp and voila!

when or if propper brass gets made headspace on the rim for both.

you just need a reamer made that has a casemouth headspace for the 2.1 version.

btw someone call Pete at Quality Cart and see if he can do a short brass run of 500 pieces.

ok i'll call him...

Great, let me(us) know!Jack has another BFR of mine now and I could let him ream out the cylinder for the longer cases....Smiler (Wouldn't headspacing on the rim be suficent?)

WOW that's $10,000 just for the cases.

I was talking to Jack about 4 years ago about the conversion, but I never went through with it. I was going to do it on my BFR 500 Mag.

I talked to Qual Cart and he is looking into a short run but needs to check tooling ect. The short runs of at least 500 pieces are more per case but you dont have to deal with the 10,000 piece minimum.

the ruger case is a cheap fix.

Ok,Let me know what he comes back with on cost and time....Who could do the Ruger Cases for me,say 100 pieces?I will pay for someone to do them for me,and load them up to if possible?...Then One day,we can do the .555 BFR with 800s at 1200fps from a 5"! Smiler Yahh, sounds like a Wallop!

I don't know how you could keep the bullets from jumping crimp if you use the Ruger .375 cases. Heavy loads from the .500 S&W cause this to happen even with a good heavy crimp sometimes and these rounds will be monsters! BOOM

I want a long .500 as much as anyone but I think it needs to headspace on the rim. Maybe someone with the means will do this and make a proper big .50 for the BFR. I'm not trying to be an a-hole here but I wouldn't trust a cartridge like this without a heavy crimp. If no one is going to do a long .500 S&W, I think the best options are the .500 Martin or a rebarrel job for a .50 AK or .50-110. The long .500 S&W is by far the best and most economical way to get into the .500 ultra-caliber realm of big bore revolver shooting though.....IF....it can get off the ground though.

What is the .500 Wyoming Express based on? Anything? This cartridge case at 2.1" would be great for the BFR, leverguns, single shots. AND...........BOLT ACTIONS! It couldn't shoot the popular .500 S&W but could shoot the .500 WE. It would be hell in a sa Ruger 77, Winchester 70, or Browning BLR as well as the MRI-BFR!

If not a long .500 S&W, then a long .500 WE. That's my $.02 anyways. thumb

Boomstick, good luck and keep us posted.

The WE is a 1.4-inch case that is basically a .500 JRH without the rim and a belt added to make it different enough from the JRH.

Ah, we prefer to refer to it as the Womans Express. Is that a belt or a girdel it's wearing?

yes the ruger cases would only be a temporary solution. with longer bullets (more bullet in the case) and propper neck tension and the heavier gun I would think that might handle it but if not have one long loaded first in the chamber then the rest 500 sw's

My 500 Kill All to 2.1 or 2.5" would be great but if you use 500 sw ammo you would ruin the cases. If you use just the shortened 500 Kill All it could be used in the bfr, lever action or short action.

Guys,Lots of good info and again,I give up until someone Else figures this out and comes up with a case.It would be nice as you wouldnt have to rebarrel and could still shoot the 500 Smith rounds....Till then,I have both in the BFR,a 500 Smith 2.4"(coming) and 50/110 BFRs...I cry "Uncle" on this project.... killpc

I completely understand, brother!! Hell, if I had the selection that you have I probably wouldn't sweat it either. Your BFR's are the coolest I've seen!! beer

For a person like myself who is looking for their first conversion on a BFR in .500 S&W, the .500 Super is the best option I can think of. If I had your BFR's.....the only thing I would seek is bullets and the game to use them on!! 2020

I really like the KILL ALL but isn't it a .510" cartridge? The best thing about the .500 Ca Super is it wouldn't require a barrel swap, thinning of cylinder walls, and could still shoot .500 S&W ammo.

That .500 Kill All would be awesome in a 20" barreled stainless Win. 70 as a brownie or buff buster! Cool

Anybody out there got a case stretcher fer a .500 S&W? hillbilly
