well, i've been moderately following this thread and suddenly i find myself wondering wth happened, there's some melt downs happening, wow, not sure why? in regards to that ottie guy, it's great he shot an elephant and cape buff but to make a distinction in penetration b/w the 475 and 500 i'm not sure how one could possibly make a distinction when similiar bullets aren't being used. ya gotta maximize each caliber with it's best loads. that475 bullet was set up to win by construction from the start, i don't at all find those observations make the 475 hands down better than the 500.

like a buddy that compares two calibers and one using hardcasts, the other punch bullets, the other jacketed bullets, and tries to make a valid conclusion from them.

Yes, Otto is our generation's Pondoro. When it was first brought out, the .475 Linebaugh did out penetrate the .500; and mainly due to better constructed bullets. These days however, this is no longer a blanket statement and the two calibers perform most similarly. Both are great cartridges and I own revolvers chambered in both. These days I usually grab the .500 over the .475, but that is mostly due to the instinct of grabbing the larger club as Finn Aagard once wrote. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

Well after having the 8 3/8 and the ultra-short no muzzlebrake "survivor"; I have settled on the muzzlebraked intermediate carried in a custom center chest rig that allows easy access with pack on or on horse or 4 wheeler. I truly like the double action , not that I did not like my Linebaugh or Bowen guns- and yes they were more compact and aesthetically pleasing. Exactly. Otto made STEEL tipped hard cast bullets for the 500 to get the needed penetration on Elephants heads. No longer do we need to go to such lenghts, with the PUNCH BULLET readily available today Otto's acomplishments showed the abilitise of theses great handgun cartridges loaded with proper bullets were capable of taking the largest game in the world cleanly _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

My seville from days when the .475 and .500's were only in JL's and Ross's brains.

and to get that penetration on an elephant and to hear of the failures of the biggest bore rifles to do the same lets ya know just how important the bullet is, more important than size of cartridge, velocity, and weight of bullet. bullet type and nose profile is something most of the big bore rifle shooters are missing out on.

What's more important: Bullet design for effect on game, or, bullet design for perfect rifle functioning? The Barnes bullets above, at least on the .458, seem to have a slight flat nose, but, maintain the roundness for perfect feeding?
