I'm sorry, John, I didn't see your question. I use Cast Performance bullets. The 500 is an LFN and the 525 is a WLN.

Has anyone here tried the 200 grain Gold Dot .44 on soft critters? I've got several loaded rounds left. Results?

John

I used the 210gr GDHP on a white tail this fall, fired from a 44 special at 1200 fps. The shot was broadside at 30 yards and the results were fantastic. I had complete penetration, and the blood trail could have been followed from a helicopter. I heard the deer go down, and it had traveled 30 yards and expired as quickly as any handgun kill I have ever made.

I also used a 210 GDHP from a 41 mag on a deer this year, and the bullet performed terrific. After penetrating the deer it embedded in a large oak tree too deeply for me to dig it out.

John...beautiful Cat....and a GREAT shot on your part...

The 200 grain Gold Dot .44 is a different animal than the 210. The 200 is a DEEP HP that was designed for the .44 Special. The 210 was made for .44 Magnum. The 200 is what Speer puts in the .44 Magnum Short Barrel Load, a reduced velocity load for two legged vermin....1080 from a 4" gun. They turn inside-out every time. The 210 is now in the Deep Curl line and is considered a hunting bullet...

I am not home at this time so I don't have access to my loading books...so does anyone know what the sectional density of the bullet that hit the Cat? I know that the 170/.41 and the 180/.44 has the same SD as does the 220/.41 and 240/.44 but that is all I can remember at this point...

I am thinking with a low SD plus the wide diameter of the bullet is why it failed to penetrate...but hey, on the positive side there was total energy deposit in the Cat with nothing wasted on the off side....

Howdy John,

Congrats on a fine Cat. He is a dandy and those scars are awesome! He must have had quite the range to patrol and protect.

Enjoyed your posts.

Looked up the SD for the 409 grain .500 bullet...it would be the same as shooting a 300 grain .429 bullet....so as far as sectional density goes the bullet looks pretty good....

RJM,

Thanks for the response on the Gold Dots. I looked up the Speer bullets on the website.

Maybe I'll try the Deep Curls or the heavier Gold Dot in .44 mag or Special on my next puma.

Maybe not. I remain pretty damn impressed with the .500's killing power.

Mike7mm08 thanks for your input as well.

Gary, thanks for the comments. Central Highlands, eh? You crack me up.

Like the others, I think we've analyzed this one to death.

Whitworth, I didn't find any 500 grainers on the Cast Performance website but did see the 525 grainers. Recoil a bit do they?

Call them (503/ 556-3006), I know they have them. Their site was recently updated and they aren't done with it yet.

Yeah, they do kick, but my .500 Linebaugh is a double action and it weighs less than 3-lbs, so the felt recoil is different than that of a single action.

For any of you who are lurking or reading and responding to this post AND are getting the itch for a .500 Linebaugh made by John Linebaugh,

I'm chasing down rumors of one for sale for around/under $2,000.

Current conversion cost is $2350 AND the base gun for conversion, PLUS a long wait.

A few evenings ago John told me has LOTS of guns in all of a sudden for conversion. Every phone call he gets goes: "I read about this guy in Wyoming that killed a lion with one of your guns and I want one, too"

He's blaming it on ME for killing this lion and writing it up in an e-mail and sending it to friends. It apparently got around...

If I get it located/looked at and if someone is burning up looking for one, I'll try to pass it along.

Unless of course I decide I need a two-gun El Paso Saddlery rig. That'd be pretty cool, huh?

Well, I found the stainless .500. It is #40. No barrel band, but everything else was similar to mine.
had some dies and brass and ammo too.

I missed it at $1750.00

They're out there....

I know this is dredging up an old thread but I finally got his skull measured by a B&C measurer.

He scores 14 10/16". 8 11/16" long and 5 15/16" wide.

Tooth aged him at 7 years, 4 months.

I think NE 450 No 2 has the correct answer, Mountain lions have dense muscle that causes less penetration than you would expect. I spent 10 years guiding for an outfitter in northwestern Colorado and saw a lot of mountain lions killed. We had a hunter who had health issues that limited his walking, so he had to take whatever we could get in a tree that he cold get to. That turned out to be an 82 pound female. He shot her lengthwise with a 150 gr. Rem. Core Lokt factory load from a .30-06. The bullet went in from the front where the inside of the shoulder meets the neck, and did not come out. I also saw a 240 gr. Sierra HP from a .45 Colt loaded with 24.0/IMR-4227 on a behind the shoulder lung shot on a young tom stop under the skin on the far side of the ribs. They are just tough critters for their size.

I have only recovered one Keith bullet from game.

It was a Keith [real Keith] bullet I cast with a H&G mold with straight linotype.
The load was 22 or 22.5gr of old 2400.

It was fired out of a 4" 44 Mag into a big pig, laying down that I snuck up on.

The bullet hit next to the spine about mid back and traveled down through the neck, through the head and was caught by the teeth of the jaw.

The only marks on that bullet was the rifling and some teeth marks on the nose of the bullet.

The bullet was recovered point forward.

That pig never moved.
