JWP, I agree completely! A guy goes hunting with his .44 Mag, gutshoots a pig and says...."Damn, I need a .454." Next time he puts a .454 cal 300 grainer through a bear's butt and thinks he needs a .500 S&W....so on and so on! Bullet placement is everything. With the proper bullets, anything .41 Mag or bigger will take anything that needs taking, IMO. More power/cal/bw is great but not at the expense of good bullet placement. They (BIG BORES) sure are fun though! clap

Absolutely nothing is more important than shot placement -- that said, The bigger bores just kill better than the smaller ones -- that's my excuse and I'm stickin' with it! Big Grin

I don't think a lot of people go up in caliber because of poor shooting. I have handgun hunted with a 41 and 44 Mag for over 20 years, I went up in size because I just wanted bigger holes in the game I shoot.

I shoot my 45 calibers and 50 calibers every bit as accurate as I shot the 41 and 44 Mags.

I think people in general just want bigger, not making up for poor shooting.

If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

Most of the folks here in AR seem to be very experienced. My previous comments about substituting shot placement for power apply to the novice shooter or the recoil sensitive shooter who doesn't want to admits his shortcomings and hasn't put enough practice in to be effecient with the gun he already has. I have read many testimonials of PH's where the PH prefers that his clients show up with a .375 than the harder kickers because most people shoot better with a .375 H&H than they do a .458 Lott. If you can shoot equally well with both, then of course, the .458 would be a great choice.

The only point I was trying to make is that shot placement is more important than power. thumb

srshooter -- very astute observation. You couldn't be more right. There are many barely shot big-bore revolvers and rifles with a half a box of ammo on the used gun market for exactly the reasons you stated. People need to get proficient with a gun of moderate caliber before stepping up to the big boomers......

AMEN FELLAS! thumb

BOOM

If we could ALL learn to shoot big bores like the little man in the picture above we'd be doing something! He's not flinching one little bit! lol

I'm pretty comfortable with my bigger guns but only through practice.

If I take a few months off I have to get reaquainted.....just ask my wife, SHE'LL TELL YA!!!!! rotflmo

When I get my .500 A2, I'll be getting all the trigger time I can. After that, I may just go after one of JH's BFR conversions....I can use the cast bullets for it in my .500 A2.

A QUESTION TO ALL....Can you shoot .50 AK ammo AND .500 Linebaugh ammo from a .50-110 revolver/rifle? I'm not positive about this but I don't see why you couldn't.
