I have been shooting handguns for around 50 years now. I decide that for my iron sighted hand guns that .5 to 1 inch high at 25 yards was the best for me. Heres a 250 grs swc .429 at 900fps Range Velocity Impact Drop ToF Energy Drift 0 900 - 0.5 0 0 450 0 25 880 0.9 1.54 0.09 430 0.59 50 862 -0.51 5.88 0.17 412 1.06 75 845 -4.85 13.16 0.26 396 1.83 100 829 -12.25 23.49 0.35 382 2.9 As one can see out to 50 yards one aims dead on and can expect a good hit. The just high at 25 yards as workout very well for my shooting with good hitting abillity. I have shot many targets out farther but for most of my hand gun use it seems to be a good zero. With vels beteen 800 to 1400fps or so. Where do others sight ther guns in for.

For Indiana deer hunting, I sight my .44 mag revolvers dead on at 100 yards. That puts them about 3 inches high at 50 yards depending on the load I am using. The last two years I used a 275gr lead bullet at 1300fps. I used to sight in dead on at 50 yards, but found the 100 yard sight in better suited for the land I hunt on and my ability. Both revolvers have open sights only. Jeremy

My 44 mag 629 with red dot sight is zeroed at 75 yds. A little over 1" high at 50 and only 2" low at 100 yards. That covers my range nicely.

For me it depends on its application. For deer I sight in at 50-75yards and for bezrs because I hound hunt I sight in for 30 feet dead on. I haven't run into any problems with these ways. Important factors for me at any rate, is to realistically consider my age and my eyesight. My hunting handguns are 44 magnum and 45 Colt. Using a deer size animal and trying for a clean kill, with my red dot equipped 44 magnum, I would sight in at 50 yards, and hesitate to shoot out to 75 unless the conditions, including a good rest, were ideal. With my open sighted 45 Colt I would sight in 1" high at 25 yards, and would be hard pressed to take a shot beyond 50. "When you play, play hard; when you work, don't play at all."
