Anyone here using the 275 grain Barnes in the .500 S&W?

I've been using the 440 grain Cast Performance Bullet and the 350 grain Hornady JHP for targets only. Haven't taken the big .500 hunting yet.

Was wondering if anyone here has some good loads for the 275 grain Barnes bullets? Also, any results on game?

Thanks, Guy

I have some 275gr bullets loaded for my 500 that I plan on using for deer hunting in Jan when deer hunting with a handgun comes in. I will sight it in probably in Dec. when it gets cold enought. I use [Lil'gun] gun powder for my 275gr bullets.

I made the mistake of using the Barnes 275gr. and 44 gr. of Lil Gun to take a small buck (115 lbs) last December. The load worked too well for me. Oldtime deer hunters used to say "The best deer load is the one that will let you eat right up to the bullet hole." Well that .500 mag dropped that buck at about 75 feet, like it was hit by a bolt of lightning. Unfortunately, my shot hit about 6 inches left of my aiming point, and totally destroyed the near shoulder and blew most of the off shoulder out the exit wound. I have never in 40 years of deer hunting seen such massive tissue destruction on a whitetail. I lost two good shoulder roasts. Probably 20 pounds of edible meat was destroyed. I have learned my lesson. Next time I take the .500 out hunting, I will use a 370 gr. cast flat nose gas check, loaded to about 975 fps. I have talked to a guy who uses this kind of load and he says the meat spoilage is very minimal, and the deer rarely takes more than a couple of leaps, then he's down for good. Whitetails are not hard to kill, if they aren't in an excited state.

I was thinking more on putting my bullet in the gut. I may have to track 50yds but the meat will be ok.

Yeah....I wanted to put that bullet about 2 inches behind the shoulder, but alas......I am not always the cool steady shot in the field, that I am on the range.

Well I have my S&W 500 all sighted in for the deer hunt with handguns. I put 4 rounds into a 3" target at 100 yds. Shooting those 270gr bullets.

You can't be serious about purposely wanting to gut shoot a deer?

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Wolfe,
some shooters do.. purposely.. but a hunter never would... and, besides, the entire animal will taste like road kill after being gut shot

Not to mention the animal will most likely die an agonizing slow death.
