jeffeossoi just love my sw 625-9 mountain gun 45LC
I put some 500 grips on it, from SW, recoil is very nice, very easy to shoot, and I am taking it, to the field, as part of my Kit for the Axis Doe/Hog hunt in 11 days!!
05 May 2009, 05:29
OLBIKERThe grip size is the same as a Nframe????Did not know that.

I can see why you like it so.
I prefer the 44 Mag, as I have been using the 44 Mag since 1970.
The N Frame Mountain Gun is the perfect rendition of a big bore woods carry gun.
I carry mine a lot in the city as well.
PS You need to look for a spare, as they are so good you can not only have just one.

jeffeossoOB - the K,N,and X (therefore L) roundbutts all use the same grip, as I understand it! ..and the N and X are perfectly interchangable!
Tony,
I certainly am looking for a spare, but the price will need to be right. I imagine in 6-8 months, they'll come on down, just like last time.
05 May 2009, 07:30
AglifterI thought the K and the X are interchangeable -- I know the N frame is different than the K
Er... just realized, I believe, that you put an X frame grip on an N frame...

DogchaserWhere did you buy the grip?
I need a couple and can't quite get my hands on one.
05 May 2009, 16:11
jeffeossoheh -- K, L, N, X are totally interchangable, if the gun is roundbutt.. one grip might be cross screw, one might be butt screw, and the 500grip comes with a "frame" that attaches to make it work with a buttscrew. I found out by asking Rodney if I could try to see f his xframe grip, with a padded backstrap, would fit on my N .. worked fine, even with the N on the X, but no one shot THAT combo
Dogchaser, i bought directy from smith, at a members suggestion.
https://www.smith-wesson.com/w...y_rn=46303&training=37 bucks! huge difference, and this is only available from smith.
06 May 2009, 07:16
Idaho SharpshooterI concur! When Colt brought out the Anaconda I was able to buy one of (supposedly) six four-inch revolvers chambered in 45LC. It is the perfect packing handgun.

Thanks for the link, I looked all over Midway and the Hogue site trying to find them.
I'll get a couple for my 629 8" and 29 5" Classic.

jeffeossoI'm hoping to take some piggies next weekend with it!
08 May 2009, 05:22
jeffeossojust back from the range.. is a 1.75" 3 shot group, at 50 yards, NOT in a steady rest good enough?
I put about 12 into a softball sized group, then adjusted the sights, and put about 24 more into a slight larger, little more right, and a little lower, group.. in other words, that dog will HUNT .. and I hope to try it out in a week!

"what you shooting?"
"45 colt"
"i didn't think you could shoot that in a revolver"
"sir?"
"my 1911 shoots 45 colt"
"it might, sir, but this is a long rimmed round"
"oh, that's why it sounds like a 44 mag"
"if you like.. wanna shoot it?"

Why not use @10gr of Unique.

Save 2400 for a REAL handgun, a 44 Mag.

Just kidding, but Unique will give you the same velocity with less recoil, and noise.
A lot of people have switched from Unique to Universal Clays, but I cannot change.
I am too old and lazy to develop new loads.

jeffeossounique and 3031 .. grand old powders...
and dirty as Texas coal..
great for 45, 357, and 38v -- the unique
great for 257 and 8x57 the 3031...
not QUITE as dirty as blackpowder .. but, really guys, those are "Semi" smokeless!
i used to do nearly 1Xgr of unique in a ruger, but I shoot 50-100 rounds a sitting ..
i seriously dislike dirty powder!

That's great, Jeff! Can't argue with that accuracy -- but I would sleep better at night knowing you were using heavy hardcasts over those shiny bullets......

aww, thanks.. and thanks to Tony ... I'll get a
but I am a big fan of XTPs, and they haven't let me down ... and the "MAGs" are supposed to be pretty tough.. and a big ole recoil sissy like me, well, the light 240s are nice...
I've got 500 RN's, waiting their turn to be loaded up and shot .. I would like to try some 250 FN/Keith types, just aint got to it
08 May 2009, 16:35
WhitworthIt's only so that I sleep better at night, Jeff.

That is a really nice piece and obviously it shoots well. I would say you scored.

jeffeossoMarco - thanks! We'll see in a week .. and i know i'll get to the big ole chunks off a semi wheelweights!
litterally, all of my true pistol hunting has been with XTPs or, rarely, sierra 225gr ... my 708 striker doesn't REALLY count as a pistol as it was a sub moa past 200 yards!
08 May 2009, 17:33
WhitworthTHat striker is what I refer to as a "ristol."
I just like heavy for caliber, flat-nosed hardcasts for their penetration potential. It gives me the warm fuzzie!
What will you be hunting with the .45 and when?

in 708- we called it the "lando" as in the huge horse pistol lando carried in the star wars movie ... killed deer like mad, too awkward for hog hunting
We are going to mcNutt ranch next friday-sunday .. and I hope to be hunting hogs and axis doe! Hoping to get within 50 and blast some piggies

Jeff, I cast the Lyman 452424 (and others...) for the Colt, and you know where I am. I try to keep some on hand all the time, in fact have a couple hundred now. Send me a pm if you want to try some of what I cast and I will make arrangements to get them to you.
09 May 2009, 05:29
Boxheadjeffe,
Is that a new gun (w/ lock, MIM parts, blah, b;ah, blah...) or an earlier one? Curious as it (and you) is shooting darn well and so many folks shy away from the new guns.
09 May 2009, 07:49
jeffeossoDoubtless, thank you, and i may very well take you up on that. I am going to hunt with the shiney bullets, as Marco says, next week, and I am staying pretty focused on that just now.
Boxhead - i am NOT a pistolaro.. i am a turnbolt rifle guy, and love them. I have a mission to try to learn to shoot pistol better, and this one lets me do that. To answer your question, its a new new new model.. with the "case" trigger and hammer.. why case trigger and hammer? because steel can be hardened deeply, while small stainless parts WILL loose there surface harding and begin to wear. its got the lock, its alll high tech parts, and it shoots like a house afire.. and, guys, its the GUN that shoots.. I bet Marco or Tony could shoot quarter sized groups with it. I am like a football bat when it comes to pistols.. learning more every time I am at the range.
09 May 2009, 23:01
jeffeossojust back from the range .. my 257 is shooting 3 touching at 100, and the 470 AR is about an inch ... the 625 is shooting 6 shots into 4-5" at 50, and about a foot at 100.

CollinsJeffe,
MANY thanks for the link to the grips, I have a 629PD (Scandium frame, Ti Cylinder) that generates "respected" recoil. I have shot 6 rounds through it with the wood grips and about a half a box with the factory rubber grips but I now have the 500 grips on order (thanks to your link) I look forward to shooting the "new" gun.

I would say you are well on your way, Jeff. When the bug bites, the rifles tend to spend more time in the safe.......

jeffeossoThanks Guys -- its the gun, not the shooter..
Marco, in my case, i always carry a pistol hunting.. or nearly as much as possible. But with the 625, there's a reasonable chance the pistol will get the first shot, rather than clean up!
11 May 2009, 18:39
WhitworthI do too Jeff -- I even carry one on my belt when I am hunting with another!

contest, but even Jeffe knows that real handguns

(aka custom Freedom 454s) use powders like H110 aka Win296!
Yes, Jeffe. I will be bringing it with me to McNutt. I am hoping to spotlight one and walk within spittin' distance and plough it with RBCD. Gonna look like Gallagher hit the pig with a hammer!

drewhenrytntI have actually loaded up 37 grains of H110 under a 260 grain jacketed flat point in Win .454 brass for use in my Freedom 10". It is extreme

As far as 240 xtps go....I like the Hornady factory loads @ 1900 from a 6" but alas this may not be achievable from a 45Colt
Jeff, my .454 is more of a toy than a tool. I am a rifleman at heart. Thats why I got the 1885 in .454.

IronWorker378I have a Mod 25-5 in 45LC. I shot 23grs of H110 behind 250gr XTP . Those bullet were clocked at 1100 FPS . They shot well but kicked too hard. My favorite is 10.5grs of Unique behind 255gr bullets.

jeffeossoi received my triple K "carry light" holster from cabela's .. great holster, and works cross draw from a seated position just fine.

fit is GREAT
