Dang, I'm getting good at this! Got another yesterday morning, this time with my S&W .22 loaded with CB caps (it was a stunt hunt as I was completely undergunned ). I was working on my first cup of coffee when I noticed a chipmunk running amuck in the backyard. I set my coffee cup down, grabbed my revolver, eased the back door open, steadied against the door frame and let a slow-moving 29-grain bullet fly. He went down flopping, and I did my best to get another in him. He required yet another finishing shot......tough little bugger! It was a 15-yard shot........

I have to say that this is good off-season practice!

But there is so much to fear in the woods and I just don't feel comfortable without my .22 loaded with CB caps......

Very nice shot at 15 yrds ! At that range he was probably half the size of a pencil eraser in your sights. Keep them pictures comin.

Had a similar scenario go down this morning. Saw another rampant chipmunk playing hell on the flowers in the flower bed under the window, so I eased the door out and shot one offhand quartering towards me. Got a complete pass-through (the second photo shows the entry wound) after having filed a flat-point on my CB caps....... Bang Flop -- one shot kill........

kaboom -- I have as many tags (and rounds ) as there are chipmunks in the neighborhood!

That last one looked like it might go B&C, are you getting any of these scored ?

Yes, and I caped it to have a shoulder mount done.

I wish we had some of the tiny critters for off-season practice. That would be FUN, although I am certain they make for quite a challenging target!

AS to filing the lead to a flat point, that certainly improves the effectiveness of the round from what I have seen.

I've tried that with .22LRs for tree rats, armadillos, etc., and have been rewarded with excellent results. It's a pain to file the tips but well worth it.

You're starting to sound like my wife!! She keeps pointing out that they're cute and I keep pointing out that they are destroying the yard (and God-forbid, the flowers!! )!

Marko, here in PA where I live, I'm always having problems with stray cats. They get the same treatment with something only alittle less powerful...not to say anything to get the CAT-LOVERS after me. Back in a day, there was a fun place to post & read about ways to eliminate cats & thier kin. It was always funny. I know what your going thru !

Stray cats are also vermin!!

And yet another one bites the dust this afternoon, but this one was the toughest so far! I shot him at 15 yards again from the back door -- I just opened it a bit and let a bullet fly. It was a solid strike and he went straight down, rolled over on his back and twitched. Dead chipmunk, right? Wrong! By the time I got my shoes on and outside he was gone!! Just some blood where he had been!



So, I start combing the yard in search of e fatally hit chipmunk and can't even find a blood trail. Nothing. All of a sudden I hear a chirp which sounded like a chipmunk. I go out to the driveway and scared something out of the bushes, so I head back into the yard and see an obviously wounded chipmunk explode out of the bushes, dragging its hindquarters. Then he heads into the ivy, under the fence and into the driveway. I run, grab a rake and manage to head him off. He scurries into the yard again and I get the chance to shoot him again, so I do. He rolls over and I am sure it's over. I grab my camera, turn back around and he's gone again!! What the hell?! I spot him heading under the barbeque, so I roll it out and put one more in him, right behind the ear.......it was finally over. Good grief!

Congradulations ! I think this tuff bugger may need honored with a rug mount and the opened mouth head. If I had this much action, My Wife would be mad at me all the time for not wanting to go anywhere !

LOL!! Remember that I do this under the guise of protecting the yard and the flowers!! The pattern that is developing is that I get a hunt in first thing in the morning, and late in the afternoon -- I know it looks like I am spendng a lot of time doing this, but they are targets of opportunity, so when I see them and I can, I step out and shoot them!

I'm thinking full body mount, standing on its hind legs, ready to attack!!

Got yet another one this morning, between my 2nd and 3rd cup of coffee. I had my modified .22 CB cap ammo (filed flat-points), and got a complete pass through...... This time I made sure it was really dead before turning my back.......

Just wackin' 'em and stackin' 'em! Got one this morning at about ten yards, a gut shot, and he crawled right up to me -- probably intent on chewing my big toe off, at which point a flat-point .22 caliber bullet was dispatched to the back of its head.



I can't help myself! Yes, another "trophy" that squeaks......

One in the morning, and one in the evening! Just shot another 30 minutes ago -- offhand, 4-yards! Dang! I am tearing 'em up!

Thank you sir!! I would not only use my .475, but I would try my .416 Rem out on them as well!! Why not?? But I'm doing waht I can to rid the area of chipmunks......

Hey Marko, you have some nice handguns. However this gives me pause concerning an earlier post you made about taking a chipmunk with a .476.

Could it be that you never used a .476 on a chipmunk?? I think you've been had.

Of course not, Larry! That post was satire, even though the "hunt" did go down -- but with a .22. I am a proponent of using enough gun, but the bullets I use in my .475 weigh nearly as much as a chipmunk fully dressed........ The .22 with CB caps is a bit anemic and not very accurate, but over the last weekend I filed flat-noses on the bullets I am using, and they seem to do more damage!

Just pulling you're leg some Pard. I use to file down the points on my .22s when hunting coons. I too thought that doing this made the .22 more effective on those critters. Coons are tough to kill with a .22 unless you take head shots, and will absorb more lead than most critters their size.

I just came back from outa town yesterday and shot another munk in the yard...... I saw a couple earlier but no shots presented themselves until this one came around......

I have never hunted Chipmunks, but have hunted off season but my quarry was different. I did a mouse hunt indoors.

You know, they do a lot of yard damage and this gives me an excuse to keep practicing on a fast, small, twitchy adversary! I shot a lot of rats as a kid. Got another earlier today in the exact same spot as the one I shot yesterday, sitting on a small tree stump. I got him through both shoulders -- bang-flop......

I'm on a roll......

And yet another, 45 minutes ago at 10 yards offhand....... He was a big one -- relatively speaking.......



Give me a break, I haven't hunted in awhile......

It's a beautiful afternoon and I decided to go out back (I am home today), pull up a chair, put my feet up, and do a little reading. Of course I brought the .22 with me just in case. So, I'm reading, and I hear something below me, and low and behold, there's a chipmunk nearly undreneath my chair. He then crawls under the barbeque, giving me a chance to put the book down, cock the revolever and stand up in the ready. He then pops his head out and I let one rip. There's a blood and comotion under the barbeque. I cock it again, and roll the barbeque back, and the 'munk is deader than a door nail. Looks like the bullet entered the head, and exited, bounced off the bricks and it unzipped the animal front to rear......



Got to get ready for deer season!

I wonder how well the CCI 22 shotshells would work on running wounded chimpmuks???

450 -- the problem with the shot shells is that they are too noisy for suburbia. They do work well, though. I've used them in the past on rats and they were quite effective. I am forced to use the CB caps by virtue of their low noise. They have been working VERY well with flat points......but they still aren't very accurate.

Have you tried the CCI CB Longs?

If I remember correctly they have the same ballistics as CB's but have the long rifle case.
