i'd have to use my model 27 6" with 158 gr j s p ammo in the cylinder i has to be the best man stopper i own...if i should miss or get taken out first my spousal unit has her dads colt .38 snubby carry piece to protect herself with.
Glock 40 model 23 and a good flash light long guns are tough to handle in tight croners hard to use with a light. even harder to to something with if you need both hands.

Quote: in my house its a s$w 36 with 100 gr. hollow base w/c loaded backwards, will not over pen. walls but will open one hell of a wound.
I HAVE SOME OF THOSE TOO....BUT YOU MUST THINK ABOUT THE COURTS THESE DAYS...I HAD ALWAYS THOUGHT THING HBWC LOADED BACKWARDS WOULD BE GOOD TOO UNTIL I HEARD ABOUT SOME AMBULANCE CHASHERS CONVINCEING A JURY THAT SUCH AMMO WAS MADE TO KILL EXCLUSIVELY AND THEY BOUGHT INTO THAT LINE OF BULL.I'M NOT INTERESTED IN GOING TO JAIL OVER SOME FOOL THAT TRIES TO INVADE MY HOUSE.....AND YES HE WILL DIE AT THE SCENE..I DON'T SOME SHOT UP CRIPPLED PERP TESTIFING AGAINST ME IN COURT.I ALWAYS KEEP 2 SPEED LOADERS WITH FACTORY LOADS JUST FOR THAT REASON.
first and formost secure the kids rooms, my mossburg 590 loaded with turkey loads will do the rest, have a sidesaddle on the gun with 00 buck and slugs incase I need to penitrate to hit a perp. BB Turkey loads will make a hell of a mess at room to room range without going through my 3/4 inch hickory paneling to bad,

Thought we had a prowler last night around 12:00 . My 16yo son came running up stairs and we heard crunching outside the window. We ran outside and scared the shit out of a little white dog.

I just heard a dog tag jingle outside. Next time he comes around, I think I'll turn the two Boxers loose. I'm trying to train them to hunt Rabbits, this should be good practice. They love to hunt and run and are really smart, the bunnies just haven't been cooperating yet.

The best idea I've ever heard is a guy who wired about half the lights in his house to a switch right beside his bed. If he hears something suspicious he just reaches up and turns on lights across the house and yells "who's there?" or something similar. An alert dog is probably the best defense for a variety of reasons.
Most burglars want to operate in secret or, if an actual home intrusion type scenario, rely on surprise. Knowing the homeowner is awake and alerted to their presence is going to drive the vast majority of them away with no shots being fired.
If they still come on, anything in about .38 Special or larger that you can hit accurately with when sleepy and scared is probably sufficient.
The thing is, all this talk of specific loads and cleaning up hallways makes for good bravado, and one definitely has to be ready, but in reality the last thing in the world you want to do is actually kill somebody. Bad juju - legal, moral and psychological. Scaring them away is lots better.
jim u have a good point, afew years ago my friend pistol wipped a 17 year old in his living room, the kid did have a knife but it still cost him 175,000 to settle the law suit the kids mother brought. next time he will not have a witness for court
