p dog shooterGlock 40 model 23 and a good flash light long guns are tough to handle in tight croners hard to use with a light. even harder to to something with if you need both hands.

ddunnClearing a house alone is not smart, and I live alone.
Get Glock26 or Beretta 92fs from the night stand.
Call 911
Watch the door to the bedroom (or the upstairs hallway) and wait for the cops.
BTW, think about the lighting in the room. Where I plan on sitting, the person in the door way will be back light. I will be in the shadows.

Stryker225I'd grab my remington 870 loaded with buckshot.
I always have at least one of these under my pillow at night.

PPoseyfirst and formost secure the kids rooms, my mossburg 590 loaded with turkey loads will do the rest, have a sidesaddle on the gun with 00 buck and slugs incase I need to penitrate to hit a perp. BB Turkey loads will make a hell of a mess at room to room range without going through my 3/4 inch hickory paneling to bad,

Lar45Thought we had a prowler last night around 12:00 . My 16yo son came running up stairs and we heard crunching outside the window. We ran outside and scared the shit out of a little white dog.

Lar45I just heard a dog tag jingle outside. Next time he comes around, I think I'll turn the two Boxers loose.
I'm trying to train them to hunt Rabbits, this should be good practice. They love to hunt and run and are really smart, the bunnies just haven't been cooperating yet.

Jim in IdahoThe best idea I've ever heard is a guy who wired about half the lights in his house to a switch right beside his bed. If he hears something suspicious he just reaches up and turns on lights across the house and yells "who's there?" or something similar. An alert dog is probably the best defense for a variety of reasons.
Most burglars want to operate in secret or, if an actual home intrusion type scenario, rely on surprise. Knowing the homeowner is awake and alerted to their presence is going to drive the vast majority of them away with no shots being fired.
If they still come on, anything in about .38 Special or larger that you can hit accurately with when sleepy and scared is probably sufficient.
The thing is, all this talk of specific loads and cleaning up hallways makes for good bravado, and one definitely has to be ready, but in reality the last thing in the world you want to do is actually kill somebody. Bad juju - legal, moral and psychological. Scaring them away is lots better.
