Thanks Woodmandan,
Funny but I was just in your area, up at the Kingston Mall doing some work today.
Stopped into Wal-Mart and bought a small limb saw to trim some heavy branches at my spot. Deer are out all over tonight but it’s to rain hard even through the morning, I wanted to get on stand. Might wait till Wednesday.

Whitworth, those rounds should be at my door by Friday then I’ll have to head up and see where they shoot out of my gun…
I just was checking out the 475 Linebaugh at BFR man they must give the wrist a workout after 20 rounds…

Hit the deer and bear with the first shots, then!

Cool

WHY would you be iffy with a 35 Whelan ....?????????????????????????????????????????????
The Whelan is like the perfect black bear round .!!! It even works well for Brown bear ...Noticeably better than the 44 mag with what ever bullet you put in the 44 ....

So I answered before I read the whole thread ..

Not saying the 44 doesn,t work ,and with a good shot and good load work well .. But the Whelan is comparable to the 338 Win mag ect ... They used to call it the poor mans 375 H&H .because it worked almost as well .........

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Just a thought, but you mentioned it was a light weight .44 S&W. I think the reason it shoots well only with the light weight bullets is that with a light revolver, the heavy weight bullets are harder to handle during recoil. The impulse is much more severe. I have shot handguns for many years and am pretty accurate out to 300 yards or so with the right handgun, but the light weight, hard recoilers take there toll on my ability to hit well for sure. Again, just a thought. Best.

Well you can live somewhere where you can wish you could use your guns , or you can live there ,,, Or be rich and fly around and use them .... Being relatively lazy I prefer to live here and use my large caliber guns for appropriate targets ..............,., Heck at least move out west where you can shoot a buffalo or something ......

I'm looking into moving house to Botswana over the next few years if I can arrange things properly. Does that count?

Born in Montana, Been all over Alaska, Live in Texas, Like the Sub-Saharan African climate better.

Costs me less money to hunt Africa than it does to hunt Canada or Alaska as it is living in Texas.

It actually costs me less money to hunt African game, by rather a large factor, in Africa on the African plains than it costs to do it in Texas on exotic ranches where they're fed and semi-tame and it isn't even really hunting. That's including air ticket.

It's a weird world.

I like where I live, thank you very much. I hunt more than most folks do in a year, because I am willing to travel, and travel I do. Cape Buffalo has been on my radar for a long time and that will probably be in a few years. I grew up out west, but work is out here, so...... I would rather hunt Alaska than live there I think........ But again, it's more cost prohibitive than Africa in many cases. I wish I had relatives in Alaska! Besides, y'all don't have wild hogs up there, and frankly, I'm not givin' up my hog huntin'! hilbily

My friend for many a year in Durban says I should come for a Cape not a Leopard when I go soon (if things work out) because it's more sporting. Translated from Afrikaans, he more or less said "With a Cape, if you f*ck up, it'll kill you with your single shot pistol. More interesting than just missing a leopard and going back to watch the bait the next evening. I'd have more respect for you."

He's Ex-SADF Recce, pre-ANC takeover, so he's a bit of a hardass.

FWIW, you'll never attend a braii in your life like one that's mostly attended by Ex-Recce and former Selous. I held up my end on the drinking part but they had much better stories.

By about 1am, the assembled were pretty sure we could take Rhodesia back from Mugabe if the US would stay out of it and we didn't run out of Bell's.

A Selous friend of mine's class started with 25 and had 2 that graduated that school. The ones that passed the test are not ones to be trifled with, even in their late middle age.

He can't shoot a handgun worth a damn because he always liked rifles and has misgivings about his son getting into bow hunting, but this is one wall of his trophy room.

You might recognize a suspect BFR in .450Marlin/.45-70 on the billiards table.

Pardon the cell phone pic, but I honestly never thought to take my proper camera (either digital or 35mm) on that trip because I was more concerned about weight restrictions, rifle cases, and ammo boxes.

The area to the right of what I photographed is a full pub style bar. Cool

He runs off season specials. PM me if you're interested and I can hook you up.
Has good "off season specials". African "summer" doesn't bother this resident of Texas. Just more flies and the plants and animals look different. Between personal ownership and handshake deals with other people he has a few hundred thousand hectares of prime areas around the RSA/Botswana/Zim border.

This is not a paid advertisement.

He's also got a Venda tracker that's better than a tricked out helicopter gunship. "You must walk, I show you where we find..." And we always found.

Reasonable single malt consumption is gratis when not hunting. I introduced the poor bastards to 101 Wild Turkey Rye. Gotta be a happy ugly American sometimes. They liked it too. Had never seen it before.
