I may be getting a really good deal on a 6½" barrel BFR in 500JRH. Does anyone have any recent experience with this caliber and revolver?

Hmmmm is it a coincidence that bfrshooter and I just got through testing one in .500 JRH with a 6.5-inch barrel? It's a great piece, but a horse off of the bench (I have the busted knuckles to prove it!). The 425 grain loads all went well over 1,400 fps and I was able to get a 3-shot group at just over an inch at 50 yards. Hitman, I can give it to you real cheap....... jumping

Yet I always get stuck with the enviable task of shooting them off of the bench....... Big Grin

No, Whitworth it's not coincidence. Someone else is thinking about selling one for a price too low to mention. He says the recoil is horrible; enough to beat former marines into submission and give gunwriters nightmares.

With the 500 JRH, couldn't a person load it down to make it "manageable" and still shoot through anything that walks? The brutal recoil is certainly fun, in a sadistic sort of way, but I can't imagine game-getting performance is enhanced, especially if the person shooting it is flinching so badly that they can't shoot the gun worth a darn.

It's not so bad -- nothing a bisley grip frame couldn't cure. It's still easier to shoot than lightweight double-action .500 Linebaughs...... Big Grin One should simply spend as little time on the bench as possible with any of these guns -- but when you're sighting in and shooting for groups......you just have to deal with it.

The low velocity 440 grain load is actually quite comfortable.

I usually like to shoot the big boomers from a standing rest. It really helps to take the punishment out of sighting in.

Why would they find it having to much recoil, my BFR in 500 Mag is not to much, even with 440 gr. bullets at 1800 fps.

Can't you shoot 500 Specials in the 500 JHR also.

If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

Why? Because it is about half the size (and weight) of the big framed BFR.

1,800?! How on God's green earth have you managed to get 1,800 fps out of your .500? I don't think my .50 Alaskan will get that kind of speed...... Confused Not trying to be a contrarian, but have you actually chronographed that load, cuz by my calculations, you're about 200 fps too fast.......

That is from when it was a 10 inch barrel. The load was what I got from Peter Pi of Cor-bon. I think they have since as well as I have backed off that load. It was manageable, but after 10 rounds the hand stung a bit. But I am still over 1500 fps with my load currently, with a 6 inch barrel.

I did not look at the size of the frame, my 510 GNR is a handful with 435 gr. hard cast.

Whitworth you are correct, that was my 370 gr.bullet with the 1800 plus volicity, I was getting 1703 fps with my 440 gr. with 40 gr. of Lil Gun powder (Cor-bon load data)in my BFR 500 Mag. Yes that was over a chronograph.

Well, the deal fell through. Anything that just whips down a former Marine like I heard about that thing just doesn't interest me too much. Think I'll stick with my .51 caliber and just use a real revolver instead of a sub-caliber trainer.

How's the hand Whitworth?
