bfr, Did you use a .44 mag expanding die? I've used them with very good success on .454 cases. Get some excellent case neck tension. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

If you shoot them broad side and go through the rib cage, you don't have to worry about blood shot meat. I know I don't eat the ribs. But like I said, give me a cast bullet any day. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ Member of the Delaware Destroyers Member Reeders Misfits NRA Life Member ENDOWMENT MEMBER NAHC Life Member DSA Life Member

Been there, done that many times. The wrong bullet will make the deer bloodshot from head to tail. No problem if a butcher is stuck with it but I do my own cutting. I have had some God awful messes from rib shots. After butchering well over 375 deer you learn the bad with the good real fast. After seeing what the neighbors wind up with using magnum rifles, they are nothing more then buzzard food.

Recut the primer pocket to accept a large rifle prime and use a Federal 215. That should lite that powder suffeciently to make that little 200 grainer scat. The violent ignition will not help accuracy, but should cut down on the day light fireball. _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

The S&W 460 Mag uses a large rifle primer's and the accuracy is still good, I don't see how the primer affects the accuracy????? If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. The violent ingnition in small cases is well documented as being adverse to top accuracy. For instance the best accuracy for the 22 Hornet normaly will be obtained with small pistol primers being used instead of the normal small rifle primers. Many 1K benchrest competitors will use standard large rifle primers in the 300 WSM and Win mags to produce a less violent ignition to obtain the best accuracy. No secret here.. _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

You want heat without pressure from a primer in a small case. Pressure starts the bullet out before a good burn is started. Each and every case will then have a different capacity depending on bullet movement. You can see it with the bad SD's, and ES's. The loads we used were compressed making a nice plug to move a bullet.

I will NOT use a mag primer im my .44 or .45. I only move to the mag primer when I go to the .475. My 45-70 is loaded with LP mag primers, not rifle primers.
