HOG,

Welcome to this forum.

Don't mix up apples with pears. .480 Ruger is a short .475 linebaugh a 400 gr bullet at 1200 fps. The recoil is slow but isn't hard.

The .454 Casull a 300 gr bullet at 1730 fps. The recoil is fast and hard.

Both calibers are available in a large range of revolvers with different purchase prices.

Taurus raging Bull (.480 Ruger and .454 Casull) is the most comfortable to shoot because of its grip and a compensator 1.25" on both side. Price is good roughly 750$. 5 shots revolver DA.

Ruger SRH (.480 Ruger and .454 Casull) is not so comfortable to shoot compare with Taurus. It is a great revolver for the price a little bit higher than Taurus price.
6 shots revolver DA.

Uberti only in .454 Casull, a bad copy of FA, with compensator in a cowboy style. 5 shots revolver SA. Price 1000$. Don't like it.

Freedom Arms (.454 Casull and .475 linebaugh), very acurate, in comboy style. shots revolver SA. Mag-na-port compensator in option, high class revolver but higher price too. Roughly 1500$ for Field Grade model and 2000$ for Premier Grade model.

.454 Casull bullet are easy to find. For the rest two great calibers.

Seems you may be a bit confused. 454Casull and 480Ruger are BOTH CALIBERS that are chambered in a number of makes of revolvers, single and double action. I like both action types and have both. I usually put hunting grips on my guns, something by Hogue or Pachmayr. You need to put as many guns as you can in your hand, shoot before you buy if possiable. Both of these calibers are a handful for an experenced shooter may be a bit much for a new one. G'luck

If you really have to get something bigger then a .41 go with the .480. The recoil on the .454 is absolutely brutal.. Of course you could try a .45-70 in a Contender. Slim

Are you a reloader? Either caliber gives you "mild to brutal" recoil choices if you're a reloader. If not, the .454 is probably the better choice because it also shoots .45 Colt. Not knowing your budget, for my taste, the Super RH is not a gun I want to own. Have you considered either a RH or Bisley in .45 colt. Good place to start hand gunning with low pressure factory or +P ammo. If you will scope it, the Super RH in .454 is the better alternative. So many choices, and so little time.

The 454 is in it's nich when it's chambered in the smallet lightest gun possible. Max power in minimum size is it's whole reason for existing. That combination generally means expensive semi-custom guns like the FA revolvers. It also means extra high pressure loads and the sharp, abrupt recoil that goes with it.

The 480 was designed to get near 454 performance with far less expense, recoil, blast and need for extreme prescision in manufacture for pressure control. Think of the 480 as a 454 without the grief. The 480 is probably the optimum chambering for the Ruger SRH and the Taurus Raging Bull. It's easier to reload for. It's much more pleasant to shoot, It's easier on the gun and shooter. It makes an even bigger hole in deer than the 454.

Unless you hunt on the ground and cover long distances with a backpack and gun weight and portability is paramount, the 480 in the SRH is probably the best choice.

I'm a huge fan of the 480, but that must be tempered with the fact that I both reload, and cast my own bullets. You absolutely must reload the 480 to get it to its potential, and casting helps make it affordable to shoot.

I'm down to three molds, a 310 LFN, 400 Lee and a 460 WFN gc. The 310 is an outstanding small game bullet @ 700 fps, and at 1000 fps is more accurate then I can shoot it. The 460 is really too heavy of a bullet, but I wanted a gc bullet that would work well in a rifle, it will still do 1050 fps and go into 1" at 25 yds.

Asside from the accuracy of the 480, I'm also pleased with the shootability. I've shot several 454's, 475's and 500's, and honestly cannot handle that level of recoil. The 480 to me is shootable w/o being abusive, though I have rapped my second knuckle several times on the trigger guard.

If you are a reloader, recoil should not be a problem at all for any of those big handgun calibers like the 454, 480, 475, and 500. The reason is that you can adjust the powder accordlingly to suite your taste.

For me, the 480 Ruger if loaded "hot" would recoil like a 475 Linebaugh. Since I own two 475 Linebaugh revolvers, the 480 Ruger does not really do much for me. I do have an extra cylinder for the 480 Ruger of my FA 475 but have not used it much. I just wish that Ruger would make a 5 shot double action 475 Linebaugh. I suggest that you try out both calibers and pick the one that you like better. Good luck. Ming

Well this is my first post here so I might as well jump on in and get my feet wet.I am not a real big fan on the 480 and the 454 is to brutal for most shooters with out a muzzel break and I dont suggest shooting with out hearing protection.

Now here is my suggestion the Dan weason 445 supper mag if you hand load you will get about 200 fps faster than a 44 mag you can shoot 44 mag or spec.my cousins 445 6 inch shoots 215 fps faster than my 44 mag in 8 3/8 my load is at the top his can go up 2.5 grains more

Welcome to the forum.

duck223 - What gun are you shooting (you mentioned grips)? If you have big hands, you can get the type that covers the backstrap, which really soaks up the recoil. Pachmayr Decelerators work well, as do the ones from Uncle Mike's. I tried some "combat" grips from Eagle with the individual finger grooves on a 45 Blackhawk shooting heavy cast loads, and they try to tear your fingers off. It's best to get a grip that will allow the revolver to roll in your hand when using heavy loads.

R-west,thanks for the response in advance.I have the Ruger srh.And I don't have very big hands.I'm about 150lbs soaking wet.I think Ruger made the grip style too sharp at the back, that's why it digs into my palm.
