Doing a 500JRH with a 5" Bisley Grip Frame in all Stainless....So,what frame should I start with?....Eye appeal is MOST Important to me,wish I could see 2 identical conversions side by side!...I will hunt with it too,so the BH has the advantage of a Scope mnt(for a Mini Red Dot) and with the Vaquero it is not possible(but will do Smith Rear Sight in the Vaquero Frame)....Decisions-decisions.....any input/thoughts appreciated(pics too) Thanks Guys! I love Blackhawks, but Vaqueros are just plain cool looking! I vote Vaquero.........but that's just me!

Tom, Jack's building me a .500 Linebaugh right now......

You may have to look around for an "old" new model. I'm not sure if the newest Vaqueros will handle the conversion or not.

Lloyd can probably tell us pretty quickly.

I can find them if needed...I have the Vaquero Birdshead SS now to convert...or sell....Why the 500 Linebaugh over the 500JRH? Same ballistics,bt one is .500 and the other .510 and I think same length case?

Definiety old model Vaquero.

Tom, I have always wanted a .500 Linebaugh. That's really the reason why. I am going to hopefully buy a BFR in .500 JRH later in the year.

500 Linebaugh...because as you well know, bigger is better. I would go with the BH...you need decent sights for serious hunting. Big bore+good sights=DRT

For sure the newest model Vaquero will not handle the power of big bore magnums. Asking for trouble.

As for the grip frame...only the Reeder style gunfighter for me in that kind of cartridge. My Reeder 500L Alaskan Hunter built on a BH frame is just...sweet. Sights are interchangeable gold dot front and large "vee" rear. Nice.

For me, I'd start on a BFR, in particular if you want stainless.

Woodrow, he is going to have Smith sights installed on the Vaquero if he goes that route -- he won't leave the stock, fixed sights on it.

SAFARIKID, go with the BH frame, as you stated a lot better for adding a mount to install a red-dot later if wanted.

My choice would be the 500L over the 500JHR. The Linebaugh will do anything the 500JHR will and more, and with a bigger hole.

Tuff decisions....I am thinking now I have scoped 500 Smiths,so maybe Vaq..What are you boys pushing heavy cast at out of 5 1/2s?...The 500JRH being .500 instead of .510 does give a thicker cyl wall, but I dont know if that really is a needed thing? What do these Rugers weigh out at with the shorter barrels(5 1/2-5")? Thanks!

I lean towards the 500JRH for a few reasons, one,I have one now,so ammo is not a problem(I dont handload) and the thicker cylinder walls too and also, there are Alot of different bullets now in .500 thanks to the 500 Smith...BUT,I am open for "change"(sounds familiar?ugh!)..so besides .10 thousands bigger, what else is better about the 510 Linebaugh and how long is the case vrs the JRH? Thanks!Smiler

Stick with the JRH, Tom, it's a fine caliber! The factory loads for it are really good as well. You'd be hard pressed finding a better load/bullet combination than Buffalo Bore's 425 grainer! The .500 Linebaugh is a chunky SOB. The only reason I am building a .500 Linebaugh is because I have wanted one since 1990....... I will have a JRH as well hopefully towards the year's end.

Probably will, but what is the difference in OAL of the brass? I really will be happy with a 425 at 1200-1250 Winkas that will kill any animal on this planet!Plus,I can get alot more with my super cannons, but they are all so bulky..The Smith 500 is Heavy(but a GREAT gun)and the BFRs are a lil lighter and also Great..Jack is going to build this one light for me with the 5" banded SS barrel, alloy ejector rod and alloy Bisley Grip Frame thumb...We are thinking 28 ounces Eekeras he did one years back, but not in 500...My Hellboy is 35 ounces with Stags....In a crossdraw,I will be a Happy camper! Same case length, Tom - 1.40. Stick with your original plan, you won't regret it. Since you don't reload, you'll be better off with the JRH factory offerings......

SAFARIKID, the reason I would go with the 500 Linebaugh is because I don't have one of them yet. And I gather you don't either.

I am cutting down to one of each round. I do have two 500 Mags though.

So I now have the following revolvers, 357 Mag, 44 Mag, 454 Casull, 45-70 BFR, 460 Mag, 480 Ruger, 510 GNR, and the 500 Mags, and a few 22 L/R's.

I am adding the 475 Linebaugh and 410 GNR real soon, as they are being built now. My next gun will either be a 500 Linebaugh or maybe a 500 JRH.

Like I said before, you are the only one you have to please.

Both are Gorgeous!I sure like a banded barrel with a rugged looking ramp frt sight, that really setts them off...I was considering Octagon,or banded Octagon(Have a BFR done that way in 50/110),but I think round looks more "Macho" Big Grin! What length barrels on each?Do you happen to know what each one weighs?I sure like those grips, lots of figure....who made them? That Engraved one is to pretty to shoot! Thanks for the pics! thumb

The revolver in the saddle is a 475 with a 5 1/2 inch barrel and the Color Case Hardened is a 41 Mag. The 41 is not mine..

Taste full well done hand engraving is and always has been exquisite.

Now Laser cut is something else again and if you can't tell the difference, that's not my problem... shame

It is a beautiful gun, and the engraving was done by some guy from Purdy, 1800 all on it's own. Cheap, when you think what doubles go for.

Last time I looked, Purdy doubles didn't come with laser etching.... stir

SAFARIKID, I was talking to one of the gun builders, and they told me if I wanted to add a rear sight to my Bisley Vaquero I could do it. But the catch to it is, you just can't mill out the top strap to fit the sight because you affect in strength of the top strap. The suggested route of building up the back strap with welding extra metal and then a lot of work to clean up the build up, and then adding a sight, but it was very costly, but if I wanted to spend the money they had no problem doing it. He suggested the Blackhawk frame was a lot less expensive, and achieves the same goal for a lot less money. Now if money is no object, by all means spend away, but not me. And this was sticking with just using 45 Colts not a 500 Linebaugh or 500 JRH.

So I have already found out the pro and cons of doing what you are talking about.
For hunting, I would always choose adjustable iron sights over fixed sights.

i dont know how to post a picture here. I have two 4 inch 500 vaqueros so i guess my choise is obvious. I like the vaqueros but to me they only look right with a 4 5/8s or shorter barrel. A 5 inch gun might be fine but then id want a full lenght ejector housing on it. If i was doing another 500 i would do a 4 5/8s vaquero with smith adj sights. Mostly because i sold me 5.5 inch adj. sighted 500 and dont have an ajs sighted 500 right now. I also agree with the other posters. the 5.5 inch barrel banded ajs sighted guns are very cool too. If i was going longer the 4 5/8s thats the way i would go.
