Should be ok mate, the Hornady Basic I have here measures 2.851", by the time you squeeze it down and put a neck on it you will have to trim some off I guess.

Coach--you'd probably be better off buying the hornady 300 wby brass and necking it up to .340. I neck up all the time using a redding die with a tapered sizing button. You shouldn't even have to fire form it ....should be at the right dimensions. NOW the skinny on the 300 wby brass I've used from hornady. I thought it was absolutely wonderful. Had great runnout and trimmed really smooth. I loaded a pretty conservative 165 grain load and the primer pockets went on the first firing with no other signs of pressure. I don't know if I got a bad batch or not. I called hornady and they said they had less case capacity than wby. I measured the capacity of rem, wby, and the hornady brass (all 300 wby)and found the hornady had slightly more capacity than the remington. That same load in the remington will pretty much go forever without primer pocket problems. I haven't done any more experimenting but want to warn you that you may not get alot of firings out of it. It was priced right and I may just load it up and use it as hunting ammo and not worry about more reloadings. If you are looking to get alot of use out of it I'd recomend you look at getting some rem 300 wby brass and necking it up.

Shows how far back in the sticks I am. Do I understand this correctly, Hornady makes generic belted mag brass?? Would that work for forming 7mm Rem Mag brass? They are but it's not cheap--about $25 for 50 cases and that would be a good price. Definately cheaper to get the right thing for your caliber unless you have some sort of "exotic" or expensive caliber like the wby's.

I shoot a TC Encore in 7mm Rem Mag, and to get the headspace right, have been using 358 Norma brass, the Hornady would be much cheaper at the prices you quoted. http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/Catalog_Horn_R_Brass.htm The Basic Mag Brass is a good way to make your own weird caliber. What was not mentioned is that for those who still can't find 458 Lott Brass, this is longer than the Lott and will trim down perfectly. I see no reason why it can't be formed to 340 Wby. -Spencer

I think that 8mm rem mag brass would work better. I make 257,270,and 7mm Wby brass from 300 Win. I first run it into a 7mm Rem Mag size die, then into whichever of the Wby size dies, then trim to length, they come out looking just like the real Wby cases. I start with new brass, have been using winchester brass. (LIGHTLY LUBE WITH IMPERIAL SIZING DIE WAX) Lyle "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.
