Been using 3031 for load development for my Ruger #1-S. Primary objectives are: 1. accuracy, 2. down range energy transfer, 3. shootability. Guess I should point out that here in S. TX, boars & nilgai are about the hardest critters to knock down. Excellent results w/ the gas checked Cast Performance 405, but after working though both levels #2 & #3 w/ the Speer 350 FNSP, I am not too pleased w/ the accuracy results. My thought is that a faster powder might provide better accuracy results (at a moderate velocity) w/ lighter 300 & 350 jacketed bullets. I have noted that many members of this forum seem to use a lot of 4198 in their 45-70's. So the question here is: Which one? IMR-4198 or H-4198? Inquiring minds need to know.... Input greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Regards - GCF "Sometimes you make eight - Sometimes you hit dirt"

I have used 3031 and IMR 4198 and settled on XMP 5744 Accurate Arms Powder in both my 45/70 and Shiloh Sharps 45/120. Great accuracy. Do it right the first time.

H4198 seems to work just a bit better for me in 300 grain load for the 45-70. H322 gets the nod for 405 grain bullets. You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.

I've had good luck with both H4198 and IMR4198 IN 300gr. jacketed and cast bullets in my Browning 1885. Loads have run from 35.5 to 48.0gr., but I prefer to stop around 43.0gr. for "comfort". I also like RL7 with 50.0gr. and a 300HP Hornady bullet, which is usually listed as a top load for "levers"; no problem at all for your #1.

I use Acc 2230 with the 405 RN Gas Check and H335 with the 350gr Hornady jacketed RN. I have worked both loads now for the past 6 months and have good accuracy with both. Scott

IMR 4198 is useful in the .45/70, BUT I have always gotten better performance from IMR 3031 and RE 7. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."
