Would someone be so kind as to run a few loads for me? I am trying to determine what velocity I can obtain with cast or jacketed 450gr or 480gr bullets in a 45-120-3.25 aka 45-120 Sharps, while near 30,000psi. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. Eric NRA Benefactor TSRA Life DRSS Brno ZP-149 45-120 NE

By fairly hot I take it that you mean at pressures substantially higher than 30,000psi? NRA Benefactor TSRA Life DRSS Brno ZP-149 45-120 NE

Quick load doesn't do straight walled cartridges. muck

Quickload does all my straight walled cartridges including 45-120 sharps straight, 45-70, 50-70,90 etc. 480 Horn DGS, 91 gr RL-22, 3.90" oal, 30KPSI, ~90% load density. There are a ton of bullets, lengths etc...you need to be a bit more specific. Use Jeffe's loads and just drop the starting amount by 10-20%. I don't have a clue what you know about reloading, what rifle you're using, etc, so I won't give any more data. The above load can be used with 400-500 plus grain bullets lead or jacketed safely. Basically all you need to do is use the data for any cartridge with the same case volume and bullet size starting low then work up slowly.

Yeah, I realize that that was really quite an open ended question. Sorry about that. Thanks for the input. I've managed to dig up some particulars that helped out. Eric NRA Benefactor TSRA Life DRSS Brno ZP-149 45-120 NE

A 20 buck subscription to Ammo Guide will get you one of the best, up to date, wildcat and some standard reference data bases I've come across in a very long time...and always being updated with the newest and coolest. Reloader's nest has some good information...a search online will turn up data reloading data or other links(at least) sometimes and turning loose $150 for Quick Load or half that for Load from a Disk will get you all the reference material you will probably ever need...for wildcatting or just regular ol' standards and a cartridge design program in both. GOTO Graybeard when it gets back online and search for 45-120 or 720 T-Rex will should get you some good data on Handi-Rifle 45-70 to 45-120 Buffalo Classic conversions...I posted some of my findings before I went all paranoid and xenophobic. The 45-120 is an impressive cartridge with a 720 T-Rex sticking out the front loaded to an OAL of 4.5", but you have to throat a standard chamber about 0.500" or so, to get it loaded to that length. Any of the 400-550 gr jacketed or lead GC bullets will give you some very stunning velos/energy reading...AND recoil levels.
