There is .338-06 brass at Cabela's, Midway, and others. Some of this brass has the Weatherby name on it, but maybe it's made by Norma. Also, I believe Federal and maybe Nosler will be loading .338-06 ammo soon, so their brass will be available for purchase one of these days. For the time being you can use .35 Whelen or .30-06 brass for your .338-06.

I use either 35 Whelen and neck it down, or starting with 30-06 brass, neck it up using the 35 Whelen die, and then resize it back down to 338. This lets me make sure that the headspace dimension is just right for my chamber. I've got a 24" bbl on my 338-06 AI, and wouldn't want to go any shorter. maxman

Quote: Whats the better way to go ? Expand 3006 or compress 35 whelen.
What Barrel lengths do you guys have on your 338 06? Im thinking 24" or 22" just like a 30-06
I believe it is better to use .35 Whelen brass. When you neck it down to hold a .338" bullet, you can "customize" the headspace by setting the resizing die to just permit the bolt to be closed. In addition, if someone picks up a loaded round headstamped ".35 Whelen" and they shoot it in a .35 Whelen chamber, no damage will result. However, should a person manage to chamber one marked "30/'06" (not too likely, but possible??) in an '06 chamber, firing it could cause interesting results! Like firing an 8X57 in a '06 chamber.....
As someone mentioned, Norma has headstamped brass now available. I have been necking up .30-06 brass & have also necked down .35whelen. I thik there is a slight accuracy advantage in my rifle using the whelen brass.
