I am getting my pre 64 Win 70 finished up with a #5 taper Douglas Premium Stainless 1:12 @ 22 Inches in 416 Rem Mag.

I have Remington cases, and intend to use IMR 4064 powder and Fed 215M primers with 400 gn Hornady Interlocks.

The Hornady manual shows 72.0 gns to 80.0 gns of IMR 4064. I am not a speed freak; I load my 375 H&H with 66.5 gns of IMR 4064 with 300 gn Nosler Partitions and any other 300 gn bullet as well, such as Hornady RN, Hornady DGX, WW Silvertips.

What are you guys loading?

I think you might be looking in the wrong place for "sane" load suggestions. LOL I believe the common consideration for sane here is, "The gun didn't blow up."

Even my spell checker wants to replace Obama, it just doesn't have any suggestions.

Do the words ... "sane load" and "416 Rem Mag" even belong in the same sentence?

I use 79 grains of RL15 and get 2400 with Swift A frames. Also very accurate under <1" at 100 yards, when I do my bit.

I need some input on what velocity to load 400 gn bullets for North America and also Africa; I am planning on two separate loads. I hope to use IMR 4064 or perhaps IMR 4350, but may choose something else if a darn good argument arises.

I am in the process of finishing up a pre 64 Win 70 in 416 Rem Mag. The donor gun was already a 6.5 x 300 Wby. I have the stock off to Ahlman's for dual steel crossbolts. I have a butchered test fire stock that I use to test fire and save wear and tear on others, etc.The barrel is a 22 inch Douglas Premium stainless, 1:12 twist, in #5 contour.

I am using Remington cases, Fed 215M primers, Hornady 400gn RN Interlocks, and have IMR 4064 and IMR 4350 available.

I tried 76 gns of IMR 4064 and got 2355 fps average with flattened primers, and it was rather cool outside. Hornady says 72-80 gns, so I chose middle ground. I have used those very same primers (same package) in my 375 H&H and had no flattening. My 375 H&H load is 66.5 gns of IMR 4064 with 300 gn Nosler Partitions.

I need to know what velocity (pressure concerns and K factor included) people are loading the 416 Rem for Africa and North America, one load for North America and a milder load for Africa. I would appreciate the targetted velocity and/or the exact load.

ETA: I better clarify this post. As an example: blank gn of blank powder yields 2250 fps fps for N.A. I drop to blank gns which yields 2150 fps in N.A. but is 2250 fps in Africa.

Well I have settled on 75.0 gns of IMR 4064. I got 2345 fps @ 63 degrees F today with minimal primer flattening.

76.0 gns yielded 2355 fps with Flat primers.

I will tell you this, you know when you shoot the darn thing!!! Way more punch than my 375 H&H! Plus the recoil pad is about as hard as a rock on this testfire stock!

I used a Tupperware Winchester stock that I bought out of the Classified's on mine as a testfire stock. Ended up with a pound of #8 shot mixed with epoxy in the barrel channel to slow things down. At one point recoil caused the lead to shift and snapped the bulkhead out of the barrel channel! Eeker

McMillan finally delivered my SuperGrade stock with the heavier fill and Decelerator pad and there's a HUGE difference in perceived recoil.
It's now a lot more fun to shoot.

I'd been using book max with Varget and the 400gr Hornady bullet squirts out at a bit over 2,400fps from a 24" Douglas barrel with nice round primers and easy extraction but now I'm shooting the Barnes 350gr TSX with Varget with a bit less recoil and groups at a boring 0.6"ctc. Big Grin
