Hi friends, I have a little problem: what tipe of products is the best to clean a barrel if I shoot moly-coated bullets????? I want to clean every trace of moly and than start to shoot normal bullets. Thank you ciao FAINA
FAINA: You could also contact Pac-Nor barrels they have a system that is supposed to leave your barrel spotless. Moly does build up in the throat and is hard to get out. if your barrel was not spotless before you started to shoot moly coated bullets it will build a coating up over the fouling and lock it in. I had a 7mm STW that wouldn't shoot the same way twice so I had the barrel pulled to send back. I cleaned the barrel with Barnes CR10 and then brushed it with patches covered with 1200 grit from the Neco fire lapping kit followed by 800 grit and then CR10 again.The patches came out as white as they went in. When they bore scoped the barrel they said the throat was fouled heavily and the bore had fouling also. The barrel is now a pry bar and the gun a 300 Winchester that shoots the same every time. 470 Mbogo
Moly does NOT build up in the throat. That is carbon caused ,in most cases, by the reduced pressure and temperature of the combustion process which is a result of the moly lubrication. Even then it has only been noted to be formed in very over bore calibers. There have been peopl that sectioned a built up barrel and had the stuff analized.
You are making problems where none exists. Use whatever makes you happy, maybe some JB or Flitz after the solvent. You don't need to get every trace of moly out of the barrel. You will do more harm through over cleaning than anything else. All that srubbing increases the chances of damage from the rod. Forget it, just clean it normally and go shooting.
