not sure if this should go in this for or the small bore forum, so I will try here first.(hate to see duplicate psots in forums, but may do that with this question, so ple;ase forgive me if I do!) I am looking for your favortie .257 Roberts load with a 100 gr. bullet. I am goingt o first try the 100gr Partition and will then try the 100gr Ballistic Tip and E Tip, in that order, if the Partition doesn't shoot. i did a powder check last night and have 12 kinds of powder that would work to some degree or another in the Roberts. If I can get an actual 2900-3000 from a 21" barrel that would be great, but a little slower won't cause me to lose sleep. I imagine 2800 would be ablout the same. I have a muzzle brake on the rifle and wanted some gas to go through the holes. oh, virgin Winchester +P brass and WLR's will be used. Thanks!

I'm loading 43.5 grs of IMR 4350 and Rem 9 1/2 primers with Nosler 100 gr ballistic tips in my daughter's rifle. I have not bothered to chronograph the load, but it is sub-moa at 100 yards. Plenty good for deer, and I won't let her shoot past 200 yards any way. Si tantum EGO eram dimidium ut bonus ut EGO memor

You should have no problem getting 3,000+ in the Roberts using 100 grain bullets and H-414.....somewhere around 47 grains but as always work up. I love that powder (same as Win 760) because it meters and flows so nicely. It's great in the Roberts. I once used it in a Browning micromedallian with a 20" barrel and routinely got 3,100 fps /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." vapo- Are you saying the H414 meters just like WW760, or are their charges usually equal in calibers and laods? I don't have any 414, but use a lot of WW760 and keep plenty on hand at all times. Slow Slim- thnaks for info. Also use a lot of IMR 4350 on hand at all times. Even though I had a wide variety of powders, i try to actually use as few as possible. Anyway, do the ballistic tips hold up OK? I have always been leery of them on big game, but the Roberts is not too speedy and IO thought I woudl try them if the partitions do not shoot. I also have some 110 Accubonds on hand, and oknow how well those retain weight. Blew my mind how well they hold up. Also have 115 and 120 partitions, so I have too many damn options and not enough time to test them

38.5gr Varget (work up to it) 100gr Sierra SBT Remington brass CCI LR primer 22" barrel Chronied 2862fps(avg for 5 shots) This load took a Red Stag cull at 188 lasered yds. During load development the Sierra was decidedly better than the Partition in this rifle. GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!! IF YOU'RE GONNA GET OLD,YOU BETTER BE TOUGH!! Marc what I'm saying is that they are exactly the same powder.....just different name for the very same stuff. Check Hodgdon's website.....they make no effort to hide it....reloading data for one is identical for the other.....to the very tiniest detail! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." The classic load for a 100gr in a 257 Roberts is 46 gr of H4350. My 722 tends to like 46.4 gr where my custom Mauser likes 46.0 gr. My 722 gets 3150 chronographed with a 100gr. partion. Probably......but I can't confirm them....so they must be assumed to be close but different. I've read of many (so called) identities.....but have never been able to confirm them and when it comes to things like this I insist on proof.... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Marc, The ballistic tips would be fine for deer. You don't really say what "big game" you're after. I wouldn't hesitate to poke a deer with one out to around 300 yards, which is about my limit anyway depending on situation. This is my daughter's load, so I've intentionally kept it down for recoil considerations. When I hit the "node" in her gun at 43.5, I stopped. I have loaded the 100 ballistic tip in my 257 AI, but prefer the 115 ballistic tip in that chambering. I also load the 115 gr for my 257 wby mag. I've not shot the accubond's, so can't comment on those. I did get better accuracy out of the ballistic tips than the partitions in all 3 quarter bores I listed.
