The 325-grain FTX .458-inch bullet that is available for reloading has two cannelures. Does either cannelure permit reloading 45-70 ammunition when using brass trimmed to 2.10 inches and 2.55 inches overall length? It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

Yeah - that's what the deep seat cannelure is for. Hornady sells 45-70 ammo using that bullet. Here's a link for info: http://www.hornady.com/assets/..._1895-marlin_ftx.pdf

I'm not certain you responded to my question. Hornady's factory-loaded 325-grain FTX cartridges use a shorter-than-standard 45-70 case. This is what I want to avoid if it can be done. It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

No, you will have to trim the case back to the specs Hornady recommends. This is so you can crimp and still have the proper OAL. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY
