What rimmed cases can be used in this action? I have an action in like new condition and would like to do something with it in an over .40 cal. (45-70, 405win., 45-90, the list goes on) What will work? Steve

I'll tell you of a cartridge for that action that would be extreemly interesting, IMO. It's the 9.3x54R or 9.3x53R in Finland. It used to be a factory offering by Norma, I think. In my opinion, you can't beat that cartridge for that action, if you want thump. No modifications required to the action. Lapua makes excellent brass in 7.62x53R, which will neck up. Or use any of the Russian commercial brass, and neck up. No special forming dies needed, however custom dies will be needed and a custom reamer. The reamer has a market, and you can sell it after one use, perhaps to me. Think about it. I was looking at case capacity and the 45-90 is just 1gr shy of the 458win. Pretty intresting. Do you think it would function trough the existing magazine? Steve

The action ain't worth the trouble. If it can't be done very inexpensively, it's a waste of money, and probably a waste at any price. For Alaska it's better to take a Ruger 77 stainless action, for example, and put a stainless 458 WM barrel on it, good sights, etc. It has a resale value, and I do believe you will be better satisfied with it in general. For one thing, there are no feeding issues, and the action can stand the pressure, accept a scope, etc. Mine has a PacNor 20" barrel, one in twenty inch twist, NECG sights, Hogue stock, Timney trigger. IMO, there is no Mosin that can come close for service, utility, function, and resale. I have really enjoyed shooting my 458, which I load mostly with 350gr bullets, and a little hotter than the stout 45-70 loads. If not the 458WM, then the 416 Ruger. Just a suggestion. Before a guy runs out and buys a barrel blank he should know the path it must take to achieve his goals.....I've never re barreled a Mosin (and don't intend to either) but maybe it has metric threads.....maybe it has other complications.... in all honesty, I'd post this on the gunsmithing forum and see if someone there has experience with it.....You'll spend a lot more for a barrel blank than you have in the base rifle in the first place....re-barreling might run you over $400.....and in the end you still have a Mosin..... Look before you leap.....then if you still want to go look at such old rounds as the 40-82, 45-60, 40-65, 38-55, or something on the .444 marlin case..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." A local gunsmith built about a dozen so far in 40-65 and 45-70 for guys here. The octagon receivers make a nice half octagon half round barreled rifle. You have to want one to do the work, which is the reason we build anything. Rich DRSS
