I'd agree with Vapodog. I have had three chronographs, a very old Oehler, a more modern PACT, and a Chrony. I have liked the Chrony as well as any of them. It is small, packs up well, and fits in my shooting box. I have compared its results against the PACT, and it was within the limits of both machines. You can't beat it for the money. Kudude

I use a shooting chrony, got it on E-Bay for $65 a few years ago.

It is a basic unit, has never failed. You can spend a lot more and get all the bells and wistles such as printer, remote readout etc, depends on what you want.

I have used it with my bow on the low end (280 fps) and rifles (up to 3200 fps) on the higher end.

oehler 35.. period...I know how you are eric...Get the best..This is the one I have..

ProChrono is my favorite of the two I own (the other a Chrony F-1). The PC is more consistant, has less errors, and is much simpler to handle at the range simply because its not in 15 pieces like the Chrony.

You guys sure have been lucky with your Chronys. I've had three of their Poorly designed models and my luck with them has been El Crapo!!! In dealing with their service department it's been a bad joke.

I guess I got My Oehler just in time.

It's all a matter of taste and or what you can put up with for a few less dollars. You gets what you pay for with these products has been my experience. I guess others were lucky or are willing to put up with inferior performance. roger

40 bucks for a chrony.. and if you hate it, well, you won't feel so bad WHEN you shoot it...

oehler and chrony have exactly the same margin of error.. I've talked to both... 1/2 of 1%

The man asked the question, what is the best Chrony I can buy. The answer is the Oehler. He didn't say he wanted to save money, he wanted something that would do the job. I have had a Beta and Gamma Chrony and had good service, except on bright days when they wanted to be cantankerous. Now the question becomes, do you like to shoot on bright days, or do you want to wait until it is cloudy, it is that simple. Just my .02 worth. Good shooting.

Accuracy may be the same, within limits, between all of the brands, but I have found the screens from Oehler are the most concistant. i have never had problems w/ my Oehler 35 in any kind of light @ any temp., something my Pact didn't give me. The best part is I'm not shooting @ my chronograph each time but @ a affordable screen. I think it's money well spent, if you can still get one.

Jeffe ! you can do better than that! roger

phurley5 and fredj338 have it right in my opinion.

The difference between Oehler and the rest is the Oehler's ability to sense bullet flight in most any light conditions. Also a bonus is oehler's second chronograph (their proof screen). This flags suspicious readings, a set that dosen't agree within set parameters. And it gives you the option of keeping the questionable shot data or eliminating it from your data.

I have just got off the phone with the Oehler people and was told that they are only temporarily not taking orders for the chronographs because of a parts glich. It is their intent to continue sales to the puplic as soon as they can get this situation corrected. They are, however, selling replacement parts and honoring all warrenties. roger

I was just on Oehlers web site and it said they have discontinued making chronos for personal use. So whats with them telling bartsche that it is only temporary?

I own both an Oehler 35P as well as the Model 43 Personal Ballistics Lab, and am happy with both. However, the question asked is "what is the best chronograph I can buy" and in that respect, I would have to say that the chronographs manufactured in Germany, and offered by NECO, are probably "better." These things seem to be finer than frog hair, but typical of German products, the equipment is expensive. I haven't used these chronographs, but in reading the literature, and talking to Ed Dillon at NECOS, I am considering of a new purchase.

i covered this in another forum on the same subject. it was in handloader magazine and writen by john barsness. he covers the light sensors on his chronys with frosted scotch tape, it stops the faulty light readings from light flashes.

STINGER ----- I used the Beta and Gamma Chronys for 5 years, the diffusers were weak and broke with repeated use, I shoot three days per week weather permitting. The bright days didn't always cause a problem, just when the Sun was in a certain position. Seemed to do it just when you didn't want it to, as in when you were testing someone else's stuff and they sat there trying to figure what this fool was doing, and I was wondering myself. Then when I tried the tape, the sun went in and half the time the reading was not normal. Twice the speed or half the speed, that sort of stuff. Finally I said F--- this, and bought an Oehler. First day everything hunky dory, then second day a 3900 fps reading on a 2800 fps load. You can imagine what I said about chronographs. In the end the Oehler is 99% as compared to the others I used. Good shooting.
