I'm building a 416 Taylor and need some feedback from some reloaders. I'm looking for some data using 300, 350 grn bullets, and forming brass VS buying correct head stamped brass.

There are few of uss here I use IMR 4064 im mine and form my casings from 458WM brass.

Others like RL15 I belive some data is in the reloading section here on the opening page.

I prefer the 350gr bullets for mine but then I built it as a AK bear rifle.

Mad Jack,

Take a gander at "Big Bore Rifles & Cartridges" from Wolfe Publishing. Two very informative chapters on this cartridge one titled the ".416-338" by Tom Hagel and the other "The .416 Taylor Wildcat in Africa" by John Wooters. Including case prep, powders, etc. pretty much what you are looking for.

Good Luck with your .416 Taylor. I'm not building one right now but if I do build another rifle this cartridge is #1 on my Wish List.

Cheers,

A bit dated now, but Ken Waters' "Pet Loads" has some pretty extensive information on the Taylor as well...

A couple to start with. Mine is built on VZ24 action and is hampered a bit with its shorter magazine of 3.30. RL15 and IMR 4320 have been ok in this rifle. I have tried 400 AFr/woodleigh at around the 73/74 gr RL 15 level. the 350 TSXFB at 74/75ish RL 15 the 370 North Fork at 71/72 RL 15 and only the 350 AFR with 73/74ish of IMR 4320. Some of the higher levels of RL 15 become compressed due to my short magazine but work fine. As always start low and work up on these loads in this fine caliber. Good luck with yours.

I use both 458 and headstamped brass and have had success with both as just one pass thru the 416 die and the 458 is good to go.

I've used 458 Win and Rem, 375 H&H and 416 Rem brass, and Norma and Lapua 375 H&H brass. Single pass through the size with all.

Be sure to check the belts...I've had cases that measure 0.0215" to 0.228" belt length...I headspace on the shoulder to keep the belt variation from killing my brass. At least match the brass belt length to the reamer.

I built mine several years ago, VZ24 action... today I would do a 416 Ruger chamber instead, but I won't rechamber just to get the "slicker" case.

I use 4320 with 350 gr Speer Magtip and RL15 with 400 Speer RN gr. Varget is also good...accuracy and velocity is a tossup, with Varget being better for large temp swings.

The Speer 400 gr RN shoots ~1.5" higher at 75 yds, ~2" at 100 and right above the 350 MT...same hole at ~135 yds. I like that. Doesn't happen like that very often.

Both loads are slightly compressed at 3.26" COL's.

Luck

I built my Taylor on a Mark X and 3.35 fits the magazine. There are several good sources mentioned above.
There have been some highly informative discussions of the Taylor on this site. Do a search for 416 Taylor and also look for RIP's discussion regarding his loads/testing.
I'm loading the Speer 350g w/ Imr 4320 and H4831 for hardcast that I loaded just to make big holes in stuff.
I bought multiple types of brass. If you get the Hornady basic belted, be prepared to spend some time resizing and trimming. 458 WM is much easier to work with. Good Luck.

great round .. aim for 2250 with 400gr bullets .. frankly, anything like 2400fps is higher pressure than I would like.

consider the 416 ruger, as it is factory
