hornady lock n load ap priming problem

Hey guys, I have had my lock n load ap for about a month now and I am about ready to throw it out the window. I have it all set up as the directions indicate, but I can't more than 5 rounds or so before I have problems with the priming setup. I load 50-75 primers in the tube as directed, sometimes the primer pickup slide will slide back and get stuck and not slide back forward, other times it won't pick up a primer, and sometimes the primers get turned sideways inside the threaded tube that bolts to the press. like I said everything is set up just like it should be, just wondering if anyone has experienced problems like this.

thanks

Just curious are you using the correct primer tube? Are you possibly using the large primer parts with small primers. The reason I'm asking is their shouldn't be enough room for your primers to turn sideways. If your primer slide is sticking it is most likely powder gumming that up or the screw holding down your primer tube is very tight and causing drag.

I've recently replaced my 23 years old Hornady Pro-7 (LNL's predecessor) by a Dillon XL 650 with case feeder. Priming never was 100% reliable with the Hornady but I learned to live with it. Although I'm only using it since a few weeks, the Dillon system looks more efficient.

what *I* did to improve it ...

largely, the timing is slightly off on the cam, the primer tube screw should be SLIGHTLY loose, and you need to POLISH the front leading edge of the primer "shoe" .. i call it a shoe, because it is one, but you might call it a slide. remove it from the press, get some 600 wet/dry and just barely break the edge.

run it EMPTY and see if the primer hole stops in the proper place .. i also polished the edges of the primer hole to just let it have .002 more grace.

there WILL be an upgrade on the primer system, that doesn't allow for any of this

you can also adjust the cam to make certain it is traveling back far enough ... if it over travels a TINY bit, thats fine, just just moderate speed on the lever

20 mins of tweaking VS buy a 500 dollar press?
bsflag

its APPARENT you haven't owned and used both... that's a reflex statement, not a thinking one

get over yourself .. pretty closed minded of you to TELL someone how to spend THEIR money... next thing you know, you'll be trying to tell them they don't NEED this or that gun/caliber/reloading tool ..

and then joining the gungrabbers in taking those things again.

And put up with: a PM that chokes on extruded rifle powders, has no calibrated adjustments, must be removed from the press to be emptied to change powder bars, and only works in the 2nd station on the press; a priming system that has had more primer tube chain-detonations than any other system and dumps fresh primers on the floor if you skip a station; a tool head system that does not allow you to individually swap pre-set dies; dies with lock rings that don't lock in place on the die while out of the tool head; a seating die that has no seating stem (you screw the whole die in/out to adjust seating depth); and best of all, pre-paid replacement parts you'll likely never need, but they'll sell you a kit of them for extra cost anyway.
