In the cost of raw materials. Just about every website I go on lately has a disclaimer about the cost of raw materials are going up, so our prices are too.

It will be interesting to see how fast they drop their prices, now that the cost of raw materials has plummeted.

All non precious metals have dropped considerably lately. I have a friend that handles scrap and he says it's not even worth hauling the stuff over there.

It will be interesting to see who steps up first.

Jimmy Carter inflation will be here within a year.
Manufacturers are reticent to put cheap goods in the pipeline.

The winner of this sweep stakes will be the manufacurer witch had the smalest stock on hand when purchased at or neer the top.
Likly the copper and led and so forth that was purchased at the top of the bubble will need to be flushed from the system before prices can go down.
Can't say there is any connection , but sierra bullets sure have been hard to come by.
Mabye they let the supply run down at the right time.
Who can tell.
Sure would like to get my hads on a couple thousand federal 210 or 210ms though...tj3006

Heres one: from the brass man.

The past several months have seen a dramatic rise in world metal commodities, therefore the cost of copper, lead, steel, zinc, brass and nickel brass that are used in the manufacture of bullet casings and reloading materials has increased in some instances well over 100%. These costs are so dramatic that it forces us to adjust some retail pricing to offset these increased costs.
We thank you for your understanding and your business!!

I saw the same disclaimer at Barnes also. All the mail order houses are claiming the same woes also. Natchez, midsouth etc.

Well, I guess I'm glad I've stocked up on lots and lots of bullets, powders, and primers. Should have enough to last the rest of my life really. Just bought some more 270 brass that I didn't really need, 200 pieces. I think I'm covered in terms of brass too.

Where are you? I have about 25,000 210Ms and 25,000 215Ms, and can get lots of 210s, or could right before Christmas.

If Copper is $3/ pound, up from $1/ pound 6 years ago....

That should increase the cost of a 160 gr piece of 308 brass = [160 gr][1 pound/7000 gr][$3/lb -$1/lb]= 4.5 cent increase over 6 years.

But the cost of 308 brass has ~ doubled from 25 cents to 50 cents over the lase year, and none is available = 25 cent increase over 1 year.

What does it all mean?
Supply cannot keep up with demand given the spike and fall in commodity prices and fear of OBama and coming inflation.

Lots of people cry "price gouging" when prices go up, without knowing anything. Your brain needs an ignore function for these common comments.

Now factor in the Minn is about to try and ban lead bullets. How many more states will follow and how many of us want a HUGE STOCKPILE of lead bullets on hand if they get banned in our state???? I guess you can always put them up for sale here in the chatrooms but unless there is a hell of a deal out there I think my "lead" bullet stock up days are over.

I know a guy with a lead shot shell smuggling system.

If they don't make lead a felony, you can afford to play games with them.

The "law of supply and demand" over the last few months showed makers and dealers alike what we will pay. I suspect the results of the component horders stampede will show on component price tags for a long time, no matter the price of lead or copper.

The local price of lead shot has dropped from a high of about 20%-25% here in the middle of the country since the high back in late summer. I haven't seen a comparable decrease in the price of bullets.

OTOH the price of ammo has definitely gone up with the post election rush to stock up. This is especially true in the various military calibers. Nobody is having a sale on .223, .308, 7.62x39, 7.62x54R or 8x57Mauser.

The high last summer was $4.00/lb for copper and $1.60/lb for lead. Today copper was $1.37 and lead was $.47. Copper has dropped about 65% and lead almost 75%. Once the price of components goes up, it rarely comes back down, even if the the basic materials drop in cost. I think the statement that whoever had the lowest supply of materials will be the winner is true. I doubt we will ever see any of that in a drop in the cost of brass and bullets.

If we don't see a drop from the big US suppliers Sellier & Bellot and Prvi Partisan will get an even bigger chunk of their market.

This is interesting.

Looking at the history of the copper price (US$ per ton) and our average price per pack of bullets (in our ZAR currency) since 2003 shows:

Jan 2003 - 1648.00 - 447.00
Jun 2003 - 1686.00 - 447.00
Jan 2004 - 2424.00 - 447.00
Jun 2004 - 2687.00 - 447.00
Jan 2005 - 3170.00 - 447.00
Jun 2005 - 3524.00 - 447.00
Jan 2006 - 4734.00 - 447.00
Jun 2006 - 7198.00 - 447.00
Jan 2007 - 5670.00 - 447.00
Jun 2007 - 7476.00 - 447.00
Jan 2008 - 7061.00 - 447.00
Jun 2008 - 8260.00 - 455.00
Jan 2009 - 3010.00 - 455.00

I respectfully ask that we be excused from the requirement to drop prices as a result of the fall in the metals prices.
Wink
The reality, as we see it, is that the input of the raw material forms only a part of the pricing structure and, often by improving productivity or increasing volume, increases can be accommodated, so that the impact is lessened for the end user.

Are we right? I wonder.

I believe for at least 12-15 years the Prices of our Reloading Components and firearms have gone up every January. Could be a lot farther back than that.

This is the best time of the year to do your new rifle shopping. January<->March is when I normally find some deals as the end of each month approaches.

Then you have April<->June to Develop Loads with the higher price components. Mr. Audette's Method looks real good then for saving money.

And July<->Deer Season should be available for Scouting, trail clearing, and Final Load Verification.

Just the way it is, January Price Increases have been the norm for a long time.

Good Hunting and clean 1-shot Kills.

"IMHO" Even if they ban lead bullets in your State, don't sell or discard them.
You may still need them some day.

Typically when the manufacture of an item is halted you are allowed to use up existing inventory. Only new manufacture is prohibited.
When they try to stop manufacture of lead .22 LR there will be an uproar.

Perhaps. But with the current master/slave relationship we supposed-citizens have with our mythical "government of the people" and its paper-tiger Constitutional regulation of government powers, it won't make any difference except to have a lot of us fined and a few "examples" maybe sent to various prisons.

Anyway, in case you hadn't noticed, Kalifornia is in the proces of barring lead .22 LR ammo right now, in the name of saving the Condor.

No, they aren't banning its manufacture or sale YET. What they ARE doing is banning its use for small game hunting in the same areas they have already banned lead-core bullets for bigger game.

And the "lead-clean-up" police are not far behind with their pressure being exerted on shooting ranges.

The anti-gunners now have not only the camel's nose, but its forelegs, head, and shoulders into the tent.

So, everyone who owns guns will piss and moan...but it is obvious from the past twenty years they haven't the spine or the cajones to do what is required to stop it.
