Does anyone have a 338 WM handload that works well with Barnes TTSX 225 gr.? Particularly interested in H4831SC, H4350 and Norma MRP. Thanks in advance.

My standard loads for 3 338s has been and is: 78 grs. of RL-22 for 2909 FPS 24" barrel 76 grs. of RL-19 for 2919 FPS 24" barrel I have used these two loads mostly on elk and African plainsgame including Eland..very accurate in all three guns..I seat bullets according to the chamber, but in my 338s I leave two bands showing. Max load of IMR4350 crimped into the front groove. Go forth and slay stuff...

I have used this load in five 338 WM rifles and all shot well. 67.5 grains IMR 4350, Winchester brass, Fed 215M primer (early on, I used CCI 250s and they worked well too). I switched to Norma brass and had to increase the powder charge weight by one full grain to get the same velocity and accuracy. When developing your load, start by seating the bullet 50 thousandths from the lands. That seating depth worked best in 4 of my 5 rifles. It may have worked in the 5th rifle too but I don't recall if I tried that seating depth or not. IIRC Barnes says the sweet spot will usually be between 40-70 thousandths from the lands and they recommend trying 50 thousandths first. I tried Rl 19 but it did not perform as consistently as IMR 4350. H4350 did not group as well as IMR 4350 and H4831 turned out to be a little too slow for optimum velocity with 225 grain Barnes bullets.

My .338 liked (it has opened up substantially and needs to be rebarreled) 75 grains of H4831 and either a 225TSX or a 225 Hornday SP. Never shot the tipped bullet; had a hard enough time getting the untipped bullet close enough to the lands.

I have 3 338s and RL-19 gives me more velocity ( I also have two chronographs) and smaller groups in all three guns, loads mentioned in my previous post...I quit using 4831 and 4350 a long time back because of the cutting through a powder measure and lack of accuracy through the measure and required weighing in a powder scale. a pain in the kazoo I delt with for years, never again..I might weigh every 20th round with RL-19,22, H414, or cfe223 these days. The Barnes TTSX shoots best in my Ruger #1-S, and the 225 Accubond shot best in both of my Ruger bolt actions. All three shoot and inch or better for 3 or 5 shot groups..and as you can see above velocity beats about anything I know of... My most accurate load in my 338 Win Mag is using 225 grain Sierra's and 70.5 grains of IMR4350, this produces tiny 5 shot groups at 100 yards (.5" and under). If I were to want to shoot the 225 TTSX I would drop down a few grains, make sure you are not in the lands and work up to an accurate load in your rifle. IMR4350 is very accurate in several of my rifles.
