Sorry if this has been noted before and I slept through it, but I tried going to Winchester's website for some reloading data and now you are directed to a site run by Hodgdon with some Winchester logo on it.

http://www.wwpowder.com/

It does seem to have better data than Winchester did previously. There's even data for the 9.3x62 and x74r with Winchester powders salute

Hodgdon has made Hodgdon, Winchester and IMR powders for some time.

Actually, maybe they don't really make them but distribute them.

Vapodog,
Thanks, didn't Hodgdon just acquire the rights to the IMR powder line too?
They seem to be the most proactive powder distributer/manufacturer going for us shooters in the USA.

the reloading data posted on wwpowder is nothing but the winchester loading data from 15 years ago, with a couple new rounds added over time. SAME data.

would be nice if these reloading manuals blend and grow!

good on them!!

there's a couple powders sold under the winchester logo that are identical to the hodgdon powders...

so, you get brand loyalty, two product lines, two labels and cans, ONE product batch process.

how sweet that must be

Hodgdon only resells powders from different companies.Winchester(Olin) was doing that, too. So it makes sense for Olin to turn the marketing over to Hodgdons.

What's the name of the company that owns/runs the old Olin plant in Florida, now?

I'd only guess that if the truth was known there's a lot of identical powders sold under different names. Personally, I'd like to see Hodgdon comeout and expose it and get rid of identical but competing powders under their control.

Gidday Guys,

I think that you will find that most of the Hodgdon powders are actually manufactured by Australian Defence Industries (ADI) in Australia.

This lends some credence to the argument that Hodgdon mainly act as a marketing company.

My gripe with them is that if this is so why are IMR powders twice the price of ADI here in Godzone.

$80 per 500 gr for IMR4064 and $42 for AR23208 (Varget). It really pisses me off because my last tin (out of 8) of 4046 is a quarter full and this is my fave powder for the 30-06.

Happy Hunting

Go to the Hodgdon site and you'll see that several powders are being terminated. HS-7 is the same as the old Winchester 571, and HS-6 is the same as the old Winchester 540.

$80.00/500 grams? That is over 4 X the price here. That would be 60 cents a shot in your 06 just for powder. Am I suffering burn out here? bewilderedroger

Gidday Guys,

Roger to give you an idea of prices here:

Win LR primers $7.80 per 100
Remington 150gr spcl 308 proj $32 per 100
Remington 222 rem cases $38 per 100
Nosler 120gr Bal tips 6.5 proj $34 per 50
Sako Quad rifle c/w 4 barrels & Burris Quad scope $3400
Remington 700 sps Blue c/w 3-9x40 Simmons $999

Tis an expensive hobby we have but we live with it.

Add to that petrol at $1.71 per litre you have to save up for a hunting trip but I do try to get away every fortnight.

This is why I try to do it all with the cheaper ADI (Hodgdon) powders.

I can't complain as long as I can still get out there and do it

Happy Hunting

Hamish:

Sure sounds like the Government in NZ sure loves to abuse the Word "T A X" quite a bit...

Too bad we couldn't just send you a care package, without dealing with the customs BS etc...

I pay $1.99 for 100 primers or $15.50 for a thousand...

Remington 150 grain SPs in 30 caliber.. I buys those for $12.50 per hundred

Nosler 120 grain Ballistic tips are $11.50 per box of 50.. factory seconds are about $8.00 per 50....

And we are loosing it here in the states with fuel prices at approximately 75 cents per litre...

As I say, " it sure is awfully expensive to be dirt poor anymore!"

Gidday Guys,

Seafire,

The only tax we pay on shooting gear is 12.5% sales tax. No customs duty or other tax. The prices are dictated by our distance from manufacturers and small population (4 million people in a land the size of the UK).

We have no economy of scale here.

Tax on petrol is another matter and makes up around 60% of the price. We should have the best roads in the world with what they charge.

Roger,

The exchange rate is around 63 cents US to the Kiwi Dollar at the moment. A couple of months ago it was up around the 80 cent mark and boy were things cheap for us then.

I should have bought up large then but with 1 son at university and another as a teenager you don't have a lot to spare. I hope the dollar doesn't drop any further as the hilux didn't pass its Warrant of Fitness and is going to take a couple of grand to fix so all my toys are going to have to wait some more.

But would I live anywhere else. Not on your life. This is the greatest place on earth so I will stop wingeing.

Happy Hunting

Hamish
