Gunmaker.
Someone who makes the reciever from scratch.
That does not include polishing up an Mauser reciever, but actually MAKING it.

Makes the stock
By that I mean from a blank, not putting a coat of varnish on a inletted stock.

And lastly, he makes his barrels. Drill, ream and all.

That last one applies to very few gunmakers if any today,so I´m willing to write that one of.

That vapadog, is my definition of a gun MAKER.

---Complaining about getting under 1" groups at 100 yards.--- The peeve.

Why it peeves me.

If its a long range set up then shoot long range and see what happens. Dont complain you only get 3/4" at 100 without even trying it out farther.

OK...just wondered....

I must say that by that definition we don't have any (that I know of) gunmakers in the USA except for Ruger and Remington etc...

Are there any such gunmakers in Iceland?

Some of my favorite questions:

"If I Ackley Improve my 308 can I expect 3250 fps with a 165 gr bullet?"

"I'm flat-assed broke so I can only afford one rifle for all my hunting, including bears and elephants, what should I get?"

"I shot a deer with a 300 Win Mag and it got away; should I get a 300 RUM or a 30-378 WBY?"

"I load for 20 different cartridges and only want one powder; what should I use?"

"How much velocity gain will I get if I Ackley Improve my shotgun?"

"Should I go with 20% or 25% purple in my McSwirly?"

"I got this 1/2 inch three shot group if you ignore the one flyer that I called; aren't I special?"

"Is $150 too much to spend for this butchered action I want to use in a $10,000 custom rifle?"

"Will I experience greater satisfaction if I Ackley Improve my wife's vagina?"

"I'm going to start making Mauser actions and sell them for $500; will you send me a check in advance for one?"

"If I Ackley Improve every item in my life, will I find bliss and contentment?"

This makes it difficult to discuss in that case....

Have you visited the custom guns forum to see all the fabulous (and also beastly expensive) guns made here in the USA by private individuals? I personally consider these folks gunmakers.....and yes....they don't make their own actions or barrels.

Dont´t be offended vapodog.
I´m not degrading any one. I would call those higly skilled craftsmen gunsmiths.
They don´t make the guns but they rework them untill almost unrecogniseable, and by the way, much better than I ever hope to acomplish but they dont make them.
Why do I get the feeling you are offended?

There's no way I will ever be offended over the term "gunmaker"....not in the least.

Here in the USA we call such folks as post here on AR gunmakers but their work is what they are known for....not the term we use. These folks are truly artists in wood and steel and most folks are dearly impressed with the artistry.

It matters not that some folks wouldn't call them artists either.....it don't change their work and for many of us it is their work by which they are known.....makes no difference what we term it.

Most of us call them "gunmakers".....and you are the first to choose to call them something else.....I doubt that anyone at all is offended as we all can define the art anyway we choose.

We can also say "I don't like that!".....and we have great latitude for personal expression.

Have no concern sir; I'm not offended in the least.

Tell us about Iceland.....we have so few posters from that country.

Great.

Yes I agree they are artists and craftsmen, but enaugh of that.
Like I said english is not my native languige so......
Iceland?
Pretty boring actually.
Not very cold despite the name and never very hot during the 2 to 3 month summer. At this time daylight is about 5 hours and in june about 24 hours, maybe like Nebraska.
Population 330.000.
Yes that fewer than in Pittsburgh. And the whole country/island is smaller than Pennsylvania.
Hunting is quite popular and there are about three of us who have learned gunsmithing.
I my self graduated from Pennsylvania Gunsmith School in 2005 but have been in the bussiness for 25 years.
Not enaugh bussiness to do it full time so I am also a machinist.
Big game is non exsistent except for rheindeer wich is not big.
Other hunting species are:
Geese
Ducks
Seal
Arctic fox
Mink
Various sea birds like puffin etc.
Varmints are:
Seagulls
Fox
Mink.

No other mammals wich sucks.
No rabbits, no deer, no groundhogs, no ground squirrels, no anything.

Gun laws border on being nazi like.
No handguns allowed and no semi auto rifles with a few exceptions depending on whos ass you kiss.
All guns are registerd by the authorities and you pay a fee of about $25 for every one you buy.
There has been no limit on number of guns you can own but word is that with the soon to come new laws they are going to limit it to 20 the argument being that "you dont need more", wich by the way the same argument they used for banning handguns.
So, the conclusion to your question is:
Iceland is a weather hell, governed by an extreme left wing government wich likes to think for its citisens.
Very few hunting oppurtnities and getting fewer.
Please please someone save me from this place.
PLEASE!!!

In a 30-06 this actually works with half a dozen propellents, but even so...

My pet peeve?

Idiots takin aobut "tips" instead of bullets on a cartridge case.

or "bullets" (like Elmer Fudd) when they mean
"ammunition"

Or refering to anything as a "gun" that doesn't either shoot explosive projectiles, is BOLTED to a vehicle, ship or aircraft, or has it's own "wheels"

If a projectile weapon that uses propellant to launch a projectile meets any of these criteria you MAY call it a "gun"

And finally refering to a "firearm" as a weapon
(regardless if it is or not)

Bee, considering some of the things I have been called that would seem a term of endearment! (Some folks have a hard time dealing with others who simply refuse to agree with supidity. Fortunately, I have a fire-proof ass.)

Have a happy holiday, yawl! (PC BS aside, THIS ONE is a holiday, the other one was Christmas.)

Ossi, do you have a viable bench rest or other target shooting venue?

Viable?
Hmmm...not really. There are a few ranges up to 500m but no benchrest competition.
Used to be but somehow faded out.
However there are quite a few of us who use "benchrest" rifles for varminting.

There many skeet fields. By many I mean maybe 10.

Wow.....I'd wager America has 10,000....and a 100,000 trap fields and possibly 25,000 sporting clays fields.

Grab a boat and move Ossi.....you'll like it here.....if one can find a job.... Big Grin

In the 2's, in the 3's.

Just call it a one hole group already.

For me there is one hole, cloverleaf, 1 inch, 2 inch and 3 inch. I have a rifle that wont do under 4 inches at 100 and its one of my favorite hunting rifles haha.
